Should have added that in no way would I condone vilification and abuse of anti-vaxxers. Just hope that the reported trend towards wider acceptance of the importance of the jab continues. All about persuasion and education innit.

Pretty much my stance and the reason for my original post @micra. Except to say that I draw a definite line between those that choose not to have the vaccine and the attitudes of the anti-vaxxers. Anyway, moving on....

    Well done to Morecambe !!

Glad I'm not the only one who can't stand mock the week !

Can't believe Ive never heard of Garath Merengi's dark place !??

  • Just thinking. If supporters can't go into stadium unless they are fully vaccinated then players shouldn't be allowed in either. That might concentrate the clubs view on players being unvaccinated.

Interestingly someone I know vaguely who works in and around westminster somewhere within the lamestream media and has no idea where I live etc etc was saying bluffer MPs like Bridgen and Francois who just want to make a populist racket and get their mug on telly and snouts in the cash know this is all a game whereas people 'like Steve Baker' really do think God is speaking to them. I was not aware Wycombe's finest was a holy roller.

Yep, he really is. My wife knows him from within the "inner sanctums"!
PS: I'm an atheist that married a Christian.

  • Is Mock the Week still going? Can’t imagine how poor that is now. Is it still Dennis, Howard and Parsons?

As for Darkplace, all 6 glorious episodes free to view here.

Seen 'Garth Marenghi's Darkplace'? Watch it here on All 4:

I was thinking that as well

No... what on earth is the thing with her hair ? Bit strange

You are obviously turned on by weird haircuts!

  • Dark place is/was excellent. I've given up on all the panel.shows now mainly because the same people seem to be on all of them, then have their own stand-up show or travelogue (sometimes plus a relative) and then all seem to be presenting a quiz show.

  • LaLiga has a vaccination rate of 93% (+ another 4% with antibodies). EFL only 59% vaccinated - and you'd imagine PL probably similar...

  • Just thought this was worth a mention. Football players tend to be in the age range of 18 to 35, on average.

Looking at the figures posted in this article on the bbc, if 75% of footballers have had both vaccines they are well ahead of the rest of the population for the same age group

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/59686996 (see first graph in article).

This isn’t an attempt to excuse people that don’t want a vaccine for whatever mad things they believe, but to highlight that actually the vacine rate in players is statistically higher than the country average. Let’s not beat them with too much of a stick if they haven’t had one. Many wouldn’t have been eligible for one or both until very recently

  • Only 59% of EFL players are fully vaccinated, according to the figures from the other day.

What I was struggling to make sense of yesterday was that government data says around 70% of the population (presumably eligible population, although it wasn't clear) is fully vaccinated, but ONS estimates say around 90%. So either there's been a bit of a cock-up along the way or a LOT of people are lying about their vaccination status when surveyed (which is what the estimates are based on, as far as I can tell).

  • It's a funny old world. Anecdotally everyone in my age group >50 could not wait to get their vaccine done. Protection from something we didn't want? More likely to take data from MSM and other sources rather than social media? Less influenced by peers? Where as I know a lot people who have said their kids in the 18-25 age group have wavered to say the least. That is until the realisation that the holiday is no longer on the cards (or now that trip to a club) and then it's a rush to the closest walk-in centre.
We were all young and invincible once and this is clearly a factor with a disease that is far less likely to hurt the ones that more likely to be resistant to taking the vaccine.
I am not sure the NBA or NFL has it right but there seems to be a stigma with players who refuse to vaccinate. I'm certainly against forcing people to be vaccinated but I would like to better understand their reasons.

  • Surely it could be sold as when some of them are filmed getting pissed, Partying with escorts or crashing their cars...'reaction to the jab' is a great excuse?
MPs and celebs 'react to medication' all the time!

  • Haven’t been able to track down Garth Marenghi via Catchup, Search, box sets or All4 Comedy and @Twizz’s link just produces a black screen. Did download one of the cycle trips - the one with Joe Wilkinson - but I’m afraid we found it rather dreary.

In the midst of all that searching I did stumble across a Tim Vine theatre performance from 2016 and decided to cough up £3.49 for that. Bit of a cheek that it will be deleted on Christmas Day.

  • A mate of mine (24) is an 'anti vaxxer'. His whole world view is based around the internet. The more I try to reason with him, the more determined he becomes. i fear the future. Any bollocks can become a movement for people looking for something to believe in.

    Happy Christmas

  • I too fear for the future @LX1 yet there are plenty of people keen to uphold people’s right not only to believe in any old tosh but also to express it whilst simultaneously not upholding other people’s right to believe and express that they are cretins who are going to keep the pox rampant and give it ample opportunity to mutate into further nastier varients.

Definitely on All4 - although i couldn’t find it in comedy too. Just search Garth and it appears.

Agree re the cycling thing. It was passable and nothing more. Lacking charm I think, which is a shame.

  • The availability of shows on All4 varies depending on how you access it. I can get some shows on All4 on my laptop that aren't available on the app on my smart TV.

  • Gary Linekar just said the Premier League is starting a campaign to encourage FANS to get boosted! Problems might be closer to home at the moment!

    FFS!!

  • What an age we live in these days.

Deep divisions in society over a vaccine and wearing masks. Lines drawn and sides taken.

I’ve always pondered where we would be 20 years ago without the creation of social media giving a platform for misinformation to spread so freely, just like a virus.

Would the uptake of the vaccine have been so much higher?

It’s a scary and quite crazy world we live in these days.

  • The footballing authorities have always done this, they don’t have any control over the players because the players are valuable assets who teams cannot risk alienating so they preach respect to the fans whilst on the field respect for the referee, the rules of the game, opponents , even their own manager is often absent. Same amount of respect for the LGBTQ+ community, I can name a dozen women footballers who fall into that category and sportsmen and women in pretty much any sport you care to mention, but not men’s football. Yet still the lip service is always given and the fans preached to. Given the well documented financial state of football it is amazing that football has yet to run a campaign to remind white van man to not fiddle his books. Always the way of taking it seriously with football is to make a lot of noise whilst doing nothing.

    Depressingly true

Some interesting points here, much better than anything that gets near the front pages of this paper.

Been reported this morning that the Burnley owner has told players if they don't get jabbed they can start looking for a new job... well played sir !

  • I ask again, have any Wycombe players or the manager come out and told people they've been double jabbed / boostered and encouraged the fans to follow suit? Since I last asked that question midweek a steady stream of managers have acted as figureheads, using their influence both on their own squad and their supporters. We're normally very vocal on social issues - environmentalism, gay rights, to name but two recently.

The only covid announcements I can think of have been Josh Parker's loony posts, Wycombe renting out the stadium for a mass vax centre and Rob Couhig campaigning for spectators to be allowed back in as the delta variant hit. A mixed picture. It's time we had some positive encouragement to get jabbed, I think.
