Ainsworth to Port Vale?

  • Not if they're languishing he won't.

  • Not if they're languishing, he won't.......

  • Well they're not languishing at present and the manner of the victory and the passion on Saturday, I reckon he'll get them to the play-offs at least. If they don't go up he'll get the boot then. Just call me richie.

  • @Wendoverman I agree with you Richie

  • I knew you would say that @bookertease

  • http://www.stokesentinel.co.uk/sport/football/port-vale-should-go-wycombes-493779 Maybe my attempt to just have a discussion on the subject actually has some substance.

  • Unless we are relegated Gareth is in an enviable position where he is...a bit like Nigel Clough was at Burton. He is safe (unless we go down) and can choose when to go. Having had his experiences with QPR, and looking around at the plight of the majority of managers who often have five minutes to succeed or get the boot, he will not want to go anywhere where anything less than immediate unbridled success would mean him getting the bum's rush. If we don't go up this season he might think about a move, but if we do I think he would want to prove himself in L1 on our budget for at least a season.
This is all conjecture. Shall we start the Who Will Be Our Next Manager thread now...so Richie can get his two penny worth in?

  • Just a discussion point Wendoverman. It is conjecture but at the end of the day the man is doing a job and if their owner decided to double his money and give him a big budget, then who knows. Obviously all conjecture but maybe on a Sunday morning sometime downline after being called a gypsy by a bunch of brainless so called supporters, then he may just think it is time for a new challenge.

  • I think he's made of sterner stuff, @Blue_since_1990. And I agree wholeheartedly with @Wendoverman.

  • With respect gents, I am not sure you have grasped how it works.

At present in the eyes of distant clubs, he is just a manager of a mid table Lg2 club.
If he were to get promotion, he would be a far more marketable proposition.
Far more likely to get an offer he cant refuse if he got promotion than if he doesnt.
And if he does and a decent offer comes along, better grab it quick as those decent offers may quickly dry up if he found himself fired by a bottom 4 lg1 club come November.

  • Cool, thanks for explaining

  • still nothing to say, Eric?

  • What makes you think he'd be sacked after getting us promoted, however we were doing, bearing in mind we could barely have done worse 3 years ago, and there was no question of the sack?

  • I seem to recall there was a very live question of the sack three years ago, maybe just among fans (when Scottmania reigned supreme) but it would've been remiss of the board not to have pondered to it too. If we were to go up and find ourselves rooted to the bottom of the table I would imagine similar thoughts might again pass through people's minds. Let's not forget the same fate befell Peter Taylor - admittedly when the club was under different oversight.

  • Also I'm with Dev on this one. Until he's got a promotion on his CV I don't see Gareth buttering the parsnips of any Championship or League One chairman.

  • @DevC - Rather a sexist comment addressing your post to "gents". However it is hardly surprising having read your self-opinionated views for so long!

A very fair, harmless generalisation by @DevC . Get over yourself, @mooneyman.

  • Unsurprisingly, three of the five longest tenured managers are at fan owned clubs:

I would not have thought we are paying GA too much given our finances, but in the long run, having a steady income at a steady club is probably very desirable, unless a really big club come calling. Paul Tisdale seems to be a good point of reference - and if Exeter keep up the good work in our division, he could also set the example of being targeted by a bigger club.

  • Mr Tisdale also endorses the beautiful game. His teams always plays a fluid, passing game that is very easy on the eye. Where as I'm pretty sure their are a lot of chairman, who would steer well clear of Ainsworth even if he ever attained a promotion. As his reputation for route one football and gamesmanship is now widely known in football circles.

  • @ChasHarps That’s never stopped anyone employing Sam Allardice!

  • I imagine many struggling clubs might see those attributes as positives if they get results. Tony Pulis doesn't exactly have a reputation for attractive football.

  • Interesting to note in respect of Mr Tisdale that twelve short months ago, the Exeter Supporters trust AGM passed a motion instructing the Trust Board to instruct the club to serve notice to terminate Tisdale's contract. One of the reasons was the "dull" brand of football he plays......

  • It's got to be absolute nonsense that teams would avoid Ainsworth for a perceived lack of style!
I remember the Lambert days, the football while not as cynical, was absolutely dreadful a lot of the time. Who can forget the regular sight of 4 centre mids across the park.
However, when he got to clubs with more resources, the style of play improved massively.

I dare say Ainsworth wouldn't play the same style with say QPR. He;d take certain principles that are ingrained, like hard work and pure commitment for sure, but it'd be different.

Don't see the 'dull' football being mentioned in this statement.

  • Dev also fails to mention that the motion was to agree a new contract

Didn't suit his narrative I suppose

  • @Malone didn't we play with four central midfielders across the park at the weekend?!

I wonder whether Gareth's repeated branding of us as a small club with a miniscule budget would also make higher league teams think twice about approaching him. I see the point he's trying to make but building a reputation as a small team specialist won't do him any favours when a glamour club or one with ideas above its station is recruiting. His other problem, especially when it comes to a mid-season move, is that he's not yet managed a campaign where we haven't slumped after Jan. Hopefully our bigger squad this year might change that. But until it does I don't see higher league teams coming in for Gareth.

  • I think there would be plenty of clubs willing to take a punt on Gaz, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if there has been the odd enquiry over the last few years.

I bet he'd impress in an interview as well. He talks well; is positive and enthusiastic. Shows very good leadership and management traits in the way he speaks in my opinion, and it seems to come naturally to him as well.

  • If you were following the story at the time, rather than reading a sanitised statement reported by the BBC, you would know that the agenda here was that a sizeable proportion of the fan base wanted tisdale fired following a run of poor home form, perceived his football to be dull ("side to side aimless passing with no end product") but perceived wisdom was that his contract was too expensive to fire him.

Not sure there is a "narrative" really. I wonder how many of those voting to give the manager notice on his employment contract 12 months ago would vote the same way today.

  • I always thought the Exeter problem with the length of the contract and the salary rather than any real problem with Tisdale as a manager. I'm glad I have been informed now.
I put the quote ("side to side aimless passing with no end product") in to Google and learnt so much. Nothing Exeter related but did realise lots of fans use this quote to describe their team or countries style of play.

    Any real links @DevC ??

  • Well football forums should be seen for what they are, but you could trawl their forums (including the 549 page "Tisdale must go" thread or the "existential crisis at our club" thread or many many more.

Or indeed you could just talk to an Exeter supporter and ask him.
