Best Of
End of season thanks
Out of everyone on here, I probably contribute the least value toward what makes the gasroom fun, interesting and friendly, so I'd like to do some thanking in honour of the gasroom 1.0 end of season awards in days of yore.
Firstly, where would match day be without @BSE's match day threads, complete with header graphic and reminders of non-standard kick-off times that have saved more than one of us from missing a game. Thanks @BSE.
We all know @Shev really comes alive in the off-season, but the Gasroom MotM threads have become an essential part of the week's rituals, along with the periodic and end of season standings. Thanks @Shev.
Talking of rituals, the attendance prediction competition is a big part of many gasroomers' weekly habits, often providing a reason to feel cheerful when guessing to within 50 after we've played 5 at the back and got a drubbing. Thanks @railwaysteve and @railwaybeth.
And our other, long running competition, the score prediction threads, not only provide bragging rights and an excuse for one's optimism / pessimism, but also raise money for Samaritans. Thanks @DevC.
All of these things involve a not insignificant commitment of time, energy and in some cases spreadsheet skills that over the course of a season add up to many, many hours put into making this place the best club form on the internet. Hats off to you all.
And finally, the gasroom would be nothing without such a lovely community of users. So thanks to all of you.
Re: Ainsworth leaves QPR
I couldn’t give a flying fuck about Queens Park Rangers. Gareth Ainsworth led Wycombe Wanderers to the second tier of English football. I never thought I’d ever see my team play at that level. My first ever game was in the Isthmian League Premier Division. He made our wildest dreams come true. He gave us that truly magical moment, together with so many other magical moments.
I couldn’t give a flying fuck about style of play or any other irrelevant bollocks. Gareth Ainsworth will forever be remembered as one of our greatest ever managers.
Re: Match Day Thread: Charlton
I have to say, that was quite special after the game yesterday. I've been at those things where hardly anyone stays for the players to come back out and they walk round clapping to hardly anyone, and not speaking to anyone.
Yesterday, almost everyone stayed, the players and their families all came round and they all spent however long it took to speak to everyone that wanted to speak to them, sign everything that anyone wanted them to sign and having selfies with anyone that wanted one.
It felt like a genuinely mutual display of respect and admiration. It's not always like this, most of us have been around long enough to know that. We should treasure this group of players. You never know what's around the corner. I'd keep as many of them as want to stay to be honest. There 'is' room for sentiment in football. In a lot of ways it's the only thing that matters
Re: JJ's last game
I remember when we signed JJ in the summer of 2014, after our very close battle against relegation to the conference. I'd posted on here that year wanting us to sign him after always admiring his wand of a left foot when coming up against us for Shrewsbury. In a rare coincidence the late great David Robertson convinced him to join that summer and on we went to make a Wembley play off final the very next season with him playing a key part.
Since then it has been a decade of great memories, countless goals and assists from left back, so deadly from set pieces. I'll always remember the perfectly timed tackle at MK Dons in the play offs, and the heroic goal line clearance against Sunderland at Adams Park.
At one point in time, the trademark JJ left footed swinging cross and resulting Bayo header seemed a weapon that none of our opponents could counter.
One of my favourite ever Wycombe players and I would wager our greatest ever left back.
A top guy off the pitch as well to boot, always has time for a chat and such a warm, friendly character to have around the club.
Hope Saturday is a fitting send off and fingers crossed stays at the club in some capacity if he does continue working within football.
Thanks for the many great memories JJ... it's been our privilege...
Re: FA Cup replays scrapped
If replays had been scrapped in 2001 we would have been denied one of the greatest, most memorable nights in Wycombe’s history…Selhurst Park, Martin Taylor, my most biased commentary ever! This is another example of the PL flexing its muscles and the FA giving in.
Re: iFollow coming to an end
Difficult to imagine quite how awful this is going to be.
Absolutely zero shits given about fans who actually go to games.
Re: Match Day Thread: Derby
Pompey fan in peace. I thought your lads put an incredible shift in tonight, so soon after Sunday; credit to them and Matt Bloomfield; bit of luck with the Derby miss early on but the intensity and desire was far higher than I'd expected/feared.
Wishing you all the best for the rest of the season - hope you can kick on next term. I've enjoyed the couple of trips I've made up to Adams Park - hopefully the next one will be in the Championship.
Re: Match Day Thread: Derby
Well done guys terrific performance just a shame you couldn’t find that goal to finish Derby off. Maybe those numpties on their fans site who slagged you off today and thought they only had to turn up to get the points are reconsidering now? Their belief that Posh and Bolton fans would be able to concentrate on the play offs after tonight might also now come back to haunt them? Still a way to go but you have certainly opened up the automatics again with that result tonight so as a Bolton fan you have my sincere thanks. It’s in our hands now so if we fail there’s nobody to blame but us. 😁
