I’m pretty sure that at this point Ricky Gervais is just an actor and one of his acting Roles is that of a stand up comedian.
In his last stand up he pretty much says this himself by drawing similarities between himself and Anthony Hopkins and asking why people don’t hate Hopkins for eating people in the same way people are hating on him for his trans routines. What he’s saying is it’s all part of his act while he is pretending to be a stand up comedian.
This is confirmed by the fact that his last three specials are pretty much all the same jokes told in a different way. Same scripts/storylines/etc just rewritten.
I genuinely think that Derek is so excruciatingly bad that it's some sort of in joke where he's been challenged to see how bad he can make something and still have people like it.
I watched one episode of Derek and one episode of Afterlife...one was an appalling premise appallingly delivered another was an interesting premise appallingly delivered. I realise I may be in a minority. He gets lots of likes and money so I assume he thinks what he is doing is of high quality. Piers Morgan thinks it is genius.

Save the whale, its fins, its hump, its tail, stop the slaughter don’t you think you ought to save the Whale.
If we fail to save the Whale the seas will be, Whale free.
Tim Rice could only dream of writing lyrics like that.

A 10 minute review of Afterlife that brilliantly tears it to pieces.
Didn’t do Michael McIntyre any harm..
We saw Henning at the Swan last night, a very funny routine, with some fireworks at the end.
When he mentioned that his first job in the UK was at WWFC, many of the audience gave a loud cheer. I don't know if any gasroomers were there.
I doubt Henning's Twitter account would pass the political purity test on here.
We were there last night - another great sell out show.
Henning had been on stage in Peterborough the night before so he went to see Posh v Gareth's Shrews in the afternoon.
He hopes to visit AP again soon
Yes, I know because dissenting voices are hounded out and never post again...
You can't say anything these days you know.
Let’s not forget our beloved @bluntphil has been doing a bit of flat cap stand up recently.
