  • A great bloke all-round really

  • His open letter made me a touch emotional to be honest.

I hope he goes down in history of one of the clubs greats. Always willing to give his all and put his body on the line, whatever position he plays.

May never have been the stand out star of the squad but certainly some of the glue that held it together. Legend.

  • Tremendous sign off letter from Wheels - the man is a class act all round and it’s sad, if not surprising, to see him leave.

    All the best sir!

  • Had the pleasure of chatting to Wheels on a few occasions; really humble, down to earth and friendly guy, who was a brilliant ambassador for our club. Oh, and he was pretty good on the pitch too! Will never forget the last minute winner v the franchise, the winner v Sheffield Wednesday in the first ever second tier win, or the play off semi final goal.

    All the best Wheels!

  • Does letter suggest that he may be looking to retire or at least go part time?

Whatever he does, I am sure all wish him well. Another of the good guys.....

  • Or rock up at Shrewsbury

  • Inevitable I guess with his lack of game time. Wheels is one man I would always have 100% trust in, whether starting or coming off the bench against any opposition. I wish the very best of luck.

    Thank you!!

I felt that this news was coming but it still doesn't hit hard when it lands. He has been excellent throughout his time at the club and apart from GK, Centre back & Left back, I believe he's played in every other position for the club. His energy, determination & passion always shone through and I've never heard anyone question his commitment to the club.

Came in as someone who performed for Exeter, moved to QPR where his career stalled after having a few loan moves to then having 200 appearances with us and being classed as a Chairboy through and through. He also seems to have never aged a day since he arrived either!

Thank you Wheels for everything you've done, all that you've achieved and you deserve the right to find your next chapter!

  • It's the right decision all round, but I'm still tremendously sad to see him leave. A big favourite of mine and clearly a great guy. His desire, workrate and ability coupled with how he was off the pitch is absolutely everything I want in a Wycombe player. I'm not sure if any other player represented the Wycombe culture and what we were all about better than he did.

I hope he carries on playing (would be great to see him reunite with Ainsworth at Shrewsbury!), as he still has a lot to offer football wise. I suspect however, he may be someone who has even more to offer away from football when he does call time on his career.

Wishing Wheels all the best for the future and thanks for all your efforts at Wycombe!

Brilliant professional and having met him a couple of times am sure that he’ll get into the sustainability side of the football business in a big way.

    Top man.

  • Properly sad about that. Great player, fantastic person.

  • Wheel is a great guy and has been an excellent member of the Wycombe family in his time here. Could always be relied upon the give 100% whenever and wherever he played. Thanks for the memories and best wishes for your next venture.

It wouldn't surprise me to see him turn up in a role outside of football as he has many passionate beliefs outside of the game.

  • I could genuinely see David Wheeler becoming an MP in the not too distant future. He's eloquent, passionate, well educated, and has experience on working on things like sustainability and voting rights in his past. Green MP for somewhere on the south coast perhaps?

  • I was going to say exactly that but feared someone would take offence (or is it offense?) and think being an MP might tarnish his reputation.

  • Wonderful heartfelt letter from a truly professional guy. Brought a tear to my eye and a lump to my throat. Thank you wheels for all you done for our club and very very best wishes for the future.

  • His departure is really gutting as I truly had a dream of getting back to the Championship at the season end and being able to give him & Blooms the adulation that we weren't able to deliver in 2020.

Now only Grimmer and Onyedinma remain.

I got to know Wheels quite well as we did a fair bit of mental health and sustainability stuff together - including a bit for RTB for World Mental Health Day. But I have to say my favourite memory was meeting for coffee and, while I decided to be 'good' and just have a drink, seeing him, a professional footballer, stuff his face with a brownie. They're just like us.

  • Favourite after that winning goal against franchise of course

  • What a player and servant he has been. One of the best headers of a football I've seen in the quarters given his height. Up there with PCH. Can't think of many others.

Long ball down the line from the back in front of the main stand towards the Valley End. Timing his run to perfection leaping salmon like high above the bewildered full back, he meets the trajectory of the ball with the perfect flick on.

Confined to history but what a memory. Thank you David for being the most intelligent, principled, thoughtful player to don the quarters and a more than decent player to boot. Missed but never forgotten.

  • Sad to see him go, but it was (unfortunately) inevitable.

For many seasons (even up to last season) one of the first names in the matchday squad, if not the first XI.

Would always do a great job wherever he was played.

Big respect and hope the future is bright for you, Wheels

P.S. I don’t expect him to read this, btw

  • Hope he joins The Shrews survival party but all my best wishes to Wheels...part of the early revolution at Wycombe.

  • I know exactly how I’m going to celebrate our opening goal on Saturday.

My favourite player since Luke O'Nien. Played with so much intelligence on the pitch and a passionate advocate for causes he believes in off it. On the other hand, creator of the worst goal celebration I've seen since Robbie Fowler's line sniffing. But on balance, I'm sad we won't see it again. Thanks for the memories!

  • Shame we never captured a chant based on ‘Sweet Molly Malone’ for him…..

”as he Wheels is wheelbarrow, through streets broad and narrow singing ‘corner flag corner flag this celebration is crap’ “

  • Feeling very sad at this news even though he was not going to play a single minute for the rest of the season barring an injury crisis. Represented the club with distinction on and off the pitch.

He embodied the spirit and determination of that amazing promotion squad and was a real ambassador for us off the field too

Good luck to you Wheels, you have a lot more games in you yet.
