If we win promotion, I think Kone will sign a new contract and won’t leave for anything less than mega money of £20 million plus. If we don’t win promotion think he goes for about £8 million.
I followed a couple of the links that people posted recently on Brentford. The thing that I found really interesting was that at the start of the Benham era, they closed their academy and started a B-team instead (because of the experience of losing players they had invested in to other clubs for nothing). So in that sense, Wanderers' new owners are very much not following Brentford and the Couhigs (no doubt advised by Dobbo and Ainsworth on the matter) very much were.
Are you being serious ? 🤣 only on here could someone find racism in a bloody aglorythm . If anything it is unlikely to have considered race at all and focused solely on footballing ability. This is the polar opposite of having any prejudice and exactly how it should be. Why not keep your identity politics to yourself and allow us to celebrate an excellent window ?
The most encouraging aspect of ML’s acquisition of WWFC is his stated intention to build a top class academy. He knows this will take many years to bear fruit which suggests to me that he’s in for the long haul.
He has a point though. There are valid concerns about use of algorithms with a "white bias" in various fields (i.e. trained on data where white is normative). However, the algorithms Dan et al use will be based and developed on footballing metrics. The EFL and EPL are clearly disproportionately black relative to the general population. If anything, the bias would be the other way around
As I pointed out earlier in this thread we currently have eleven non-white players in our squad so I think any fears of a discriminatory approach to recruitment are misplaced. I also believe that our senior management team would be happy to sign any promising player they think would improve our squad regardless of colour or creed.
big fat yep, that's why so many clubs have been splashing the cash this time round as won't be able to do the same next season
Clubs in Leagues One and Two will be restricted in the amount of money put into the club from owners that can be spent on player wages and transfer fees from the 2025-26 season.
Under new rules sides will only be able to spend a proportion of any investment over £500,000.
Owners in League One putting £1m or more into a club will only be able to spend 60% on player-related expenditure while League Two sides will only be permitted to spend 50%.
I fully agree Alan, and I think it was a crazy suggestion from Aloysius to start with. Consider also that all but one of the players we've let go this transfer window have been white too
What I don't understand is how the football club is going to balance the financial ins and outs so that we don't fall foul of FFP rules?
Sure the sums we are spending may be small change to ML. However, once we are no longer in League 1 but are in the Championship the rule regarding football fortune change. If I understand correctly ML can't just keep pumping unlimited amounts of money into the club as he's able to now.
The football club has to become much better at generating income. Presumably, with the model we are working towards, that's from players sales, TV deal, extra bums on seats and match day sales etc.
I suppose we have to get used to the idea of selling our brightest talent for mega money. How else is this going to be sustainable?
I think this is why we've had such a spending bonanza this January. If we go up to the Champ (and there are absolutely no excuses for us not to do so now), then we've bought all of these players under much more generous financial rules than we would have done in the Summer and beyond. I think we now have the vast majority of the squad that Rice and co envisage us having next season in the Championship (if all goes to plan and we can hold off Wrexham)
I meant that James has a point. I think we're on the same page here, because I also agree that it's absolutely irrelevant to data-led player recruitment in football
It's a valid question for data science in general, however in this kind of a scenario a data search and stats based approach is far more likely to be representative and fair, and less open to unconscious bias than the old model which really doesn't fit any of the guidelines in that area.
I'm not saying there aren't good fair people in football but we've seen others and the Idea of picking an unqualified local fan favourite to be manager, letting him pick his friends or anyone he wants as staff and basing his hiring / signing decisions on a closed fews opinions over who might be a good fit with existing players kind of goes against everything HR is for.
As we are spending so much on the academy and if we are still in League One, I suspect ML could put in £20M to the club with £12M going towards the first team and £8M towards the academy. The academy does not count towards the 60%.
Add in other money and we could still end up with League One wages next season above anyone bar Birmingham this season.
Theoretically then, Mikhael could gift £100m to the club and £60m could be used for wages/transfer fees. I assume the other £40m would have to simply sit in the Club's bank account. I'm sure that must be wrong, but hopefully a financial expert on here can clarify.
Comments
Brentford replaced Maupay with Watkins (albeit not directly as Watkins was really a winger when he signed) and Watkins with Toney
No Dane, no gain.
As long as we don't end up with mega-flop Rasmus Hojlund

Perhaps you should learn more about a subject before you mouth off with such certainty.
If we go up and still sell Kone, I think it's more likely we will try and get a Premier League loanee.

Just need to play players in the way that extracts their strength.

If we go up with Kone scoring another 7-10 goals, I could see a world where a PL side wants Kone and we get him back on loan for another season
It was like pre season with Kone, one poster going mad because people had the cheek to ask who the woman and child on the pitch with him were.

And a gentle reminder that our all time most valuable player that we've gone to superb lengths to keep isn't white.
Every year we find & develop a couple of 10m gems and sell them on whilst we develop our own class of 92.
I can't help but notice that none of the new signings are ginger either. More blatant discrimination...
Just enjoy the ride for now and hope it's not another "don't worry about the money" massive blow up ahoy.

If anything, this has been one our most diverse windows ever. Players signed from leagues in four different countries.
