  • In fairness, it does take a special kind of genius to play David James up front

    😀👏👏👍

    Martin O’Neill didn’t do too badly…did he?

  • I suspect he was there on Saturday to support his coaching pal Kevin Nolan. I suspect Psycho makes a good number 2.

Though Danny Mills did suggest he was tactically poor and had no plan B.

  • Article suggesting that Lee Johnson hasn't been approached...

    https://uk.sports.yahoo.com/news/next-job-one-lee-johnson-083657475.html

  • Just proves that the odds are a farce anyway - the only link to Lee Johnson is that he was spotted at the Mansfield game. Meanwhile last night Ashley Cole went from 66/1 to 12/1 after being mentioned on here a couple of times. I imagine whoever we appoint won't even have been mentioned yet.

  • Bit of a random one but Richie Wellens is doing a good job at Orient. We could do a lot worse.

  • I’m not really surprised it’s dragging out a little. Some of the big names banded around might not like the idea of being a small cog at a club that is still perceived as small of course. I’m still thinking we will go for a new face. New to the UK or new to first team coaching.

Either way it’s going to be a new era. I’m hoping it’s a MoN new era and not a Smith new era.

  • I did think about him the other day but not sure he'd leave a play-off push for an uncertain shot at autos

  • Maybe announced tonight?

  • I'd still be happy with Skubala or Dean Brennan of those lower down the pyramid who are currently employed.

From leftfield, Wiegman to be the first woman to manage an EFL team. That would generate some noise! Although highly unlikely.

  • Hopefully! The trail has gone very cold since we heard that we'd approached the FA about approaching them to seek permission.

  • Don’t know about that. I heard about a manager recently who left the automatic promotion slots for a team facing a relegation battle. 😉

  • I dont care who we get as long as He/She is better quaified than the last fella

  • Carsley would be an unbelievable appointment.

The last manager of the England full international men's team at Wycombe Wanderers. Just imagine!

The U21 squad he coached played some great football.

  • Would be the first time we had a former England U21 manager who had also caretaker managed England since...the last time.

Mr Taylor got us promoted but in a very tepid style. Who can forget that home defeat hanging on to hear that we were promoted!

  • Although there was a big gap between Taylor being with England and eventually joing us. And if memory serves Eriksson was already in place as manager but there was a weird period when he was still at Lazio so couldn't actually sit on the bench?

  • Peter Taylor got us promoted and came to the Berks Agricultural College where a group of us were doing our FA level 2 badges for a Q&A session. Decent bloke in my view.

  • Taylor came across as a decent affable bloke but the football was terrible. I enjoyed being relegated under Waddock more than I did his promotion. I believe Waddock eventually tried being less gung ho which was his downfall.

  • He was stitched up by Hayes' little pre season ultimatum meaning we only had the absolute bottom of the barrel to pick from signings wise. Had no chance of staying up after that.

But even before that his recruitment didn't half have some "interesting" characters.

  • Caught up with a QPR supporting colleague for the first time in a couple of months who is good friends with Gareth.

Apparently we were paying GA about 250k towards the end, QPR then offered him 650k, which continued to be paid for the full 2.5 years after he was sacked (hence why he didn’t rush for something else).

It’s probably reasonable to assume that Rob paid Bloomfield something similar to GA.

Bearing in mind QPR were desperately trying to hit their 3 year FFP cycle after 2 years of massive losses (and Luton are in the 1st year of a 3 year parachute payment period), it’s probably safe to assume Luton offered Matt even more than QPR offered GA (plus a 3.5 year deal).

So arguably we could have pushed more to try and keep him, but unlikely we were going to match Luton.

  • No way was Bloomers on anything near that. The bloke was too tight to sleep in a hotel preferring the training ground !!

  • Ultimately they brought him in to replace a guy they sacked who had previously guided them to the Premier League, so should have offered him a cracking deal. Good luck to Matt and move on but I’d really like someone in place for us now sooner rather than later.

  • So is Sam Grace not an option? He’s had a brilliant run over the last few games and from his post match interview he came across very well.

Personally, would love him to be given a crack at it but I would worry if he was given the role it could damage his reputation if it all went awry over the next couple months and we threw away this lead for automatic promotion.

What a great memory to have by being the gaffer over the last three games with a team so together. Priceless.

  • Trouble is, if he takes/gets it, then things don't turn out as hoped he's gone, not even a job at the club, just like Smillie. Would be a massive shame when he seems very secure with the development side of things. He might not even want it full time ?

Was anyone spotted in the crowd last night ?

  • There were also a number of saves there keeper made that would have gone in on another day.

The positives, really, was we created those chances when we had struggled to that in previous games. Even against 11 men with a lead making it hard for us to score.

Yes it took a pen and a sending off to help, but bar the first ten mins or so (and a late scare as a result of pushing for a winner) we were on top and SG and the team should get the credit for that.

That said, I wouldn’t be pushing for SG to get the role permanently. But then I didn’t think MB was ready after only 4 months at col u, so what do I know?

  • Leftfield choice

  • Agreed. Sam is a top fella but best kept where he's strongest.

Your take on the thin line between highs and lows over the last game is really spot on. In the delight at the winner it's very easy to forget how a mad 2min of pen and red card absolutely opened that game up.
