I don't know the answer - but I have always assumed that no shows don't count and it is people through the turnstiles. Perhaps someone does know the answer?
My understanding is that season tickets are counted whether they come or not but others only if they turn up.
Believe there is a VAT wrinkle that allows clubs to retain full value of tickets, including amount that would normally be paid to HMRC on no-shows as they have not received a service but that would only apply to any season ticket holders who didn't attend all season.

Lonwijk injured for tonight and Huddersfield down to the bare bones apparently.
Do the tickets purchased for the game last year count towards the attendance figure. Can’t see many Terriers travelling down even with tickets.
After a really strong showing in the Exeter (h) thread, I think we're back to being bloody useless

This of course may be bollocks.

Hmm, there is no way 900 Mansfield fans watched the game in November. That stand was barely a third full let alone half full.
I suggest tickets purchased are counted regardless of whether they watch the match

I was there at that game and I reckon it was over or very close to half full. I was surprised how many had come across midweek
