watched the first half of the Birmingham game honestly think we play a better style of football . There is no way they will run off with the title , will be up there but no guaranteed title unless they spend another 10 million or so .
Did he "do wonders" to get them up? Their squad was extremely strong for the Championship. Promotion was the minimum expectation imo. I like Russell Martin as a guy, but he's being proven to be miles out of his depth this season. Far too stubborn with his style of play which is consistently resulting in defensive errors and goals conceded. No chance they stay up with him still in post.
The interesting thing about Russell Martin, who I also really like, is surely that he got the Southampton job after fairly underwhelming performance at Franchise and Swansea. He never threatened to get either of those teams promoted but got both successfully playing his style. So, Southampton appointed him knowing exactly what he would do in terms of style and the level of his commitment to it and that stratospheric win ratios were far from guaranteed. From that point of view, it would seem really odd to sack him for doing exactly as expected.
I agree to an extent about a manager having a playing style and knowing what to expect. However it's always been the case that a managers job is to set up a team to play in a style that wins matches.
If Martin really believes that his playing style is correct and it's the players who are at fault for not being able to implement it, then why hasn't he and his backroom team recruited the players to be able to play that way in the PL?
Ultimately, as the manager, it's your responsibility to either coach the team to play your way and win, recruit different players who can play that way and win, or change the way you play and win.
Sticking to a style of play and losing eventually gets your team relegated the most likely gets you the sack. He does have a choice in what he does.
The 'wonder', if you want to call it that, was that they got through the play-offs at the expense of the superior (over the season but not 'on the day') Leeds. With Leicester and Ipswich mopping up the promotion spots, this was a decent achievement, done the hard way.
