Match Day Thread: Stockport

  • Yes it’s absolutely a lose-lose situation but if we had been beaten so comprehensively and the sponsors MOTM was grinning from ear to ear with them after the game, I think I’d feel pretty peeved.

  • We might not have signed players for big fees, but I’d imagine our wage bill is significantly higher than it ever was under Ainsworth.

  • When Enfield won 5-1 at Loakes Park, the 'home' POTM award went to Enfield's Nicky Francis, for scoring all five goals. Admittedly it would have been hard to pick out one of our players.

  • No doubt, given the quality across the squad...but giving a decent wedge to a free transfer must count as good business.

  • I'm led to believe Stockport are a very good team with big backers behind the scenes.... before kick off I would have taken a point 💯....

I've read a few comments from county fans saying they were awful etc when in hindsight we made them awful. That was a superior demolition from our boys.

The most amazing thing from last night, I think we can play better than that! We didn't seem to get out of 3rd gear.

    Incredible job by Blooms.

Special mention to Pattenden, he nullified one of the leagues most dangerous players with ease.

    Utw

  • Yes, the streak is at either 11 or 12 years now, I forget which. It speaks volumes of our club!

  • Incidentally, I was surprised to read one post which described last night’s referee as ‘awful’ because I thought he was excellent and I’m not normally given to dishing out praise to referees.

  • I don't know if it would be unkind to say Jasper reminds me of the sort of player Martin O'Neill used to pluck seemingly out of thin air that would go in and do a job. His application has been top class and has shown he can make a telling contribution in a side playing sensational stuff at present.

  • Agree although I am struggling to get used to all in wrestling being part and parcel of the game I thought the officials were consistent in their approach last night and generally had a good game

  • No clue why some of us are worried about how our financial backing might be perceived. A few years ago, we almost went under, we now have the cash to challenge at the top of League 1 - which is, more or less, the only way you can get there.

  • The championship season would be an interesting comparison as there were rumours of some big wages for the likes of Vokes and people.

We clearly have higher numbers in the squad now.

  • Just watched Morley’s interview on Wanderers TV . Absolutely loved it when he said “ it was a proud moment to score my first goal for this great club” . Shows what a amazing club we support.

I know I can come across as a cynical old ba$t@rd at times yet I have spent today floating on air in disbelief- mostly at our current performance as a club. These are indeed special times which I am relishing. COYB’s!

  • Just seen this on the Huddersfield forum:

It's the old, they won't be up there for very long opinion...

'Wycombe 5-0 up away now. Let’s hope the Sierra Leone FA call up Koroma, the way the chairboys are playing right now.

Absolutely this. We need this postponing and reschedule it in late March. They won't keep this form up.

I'd start Koroma on Saturday just to increase the chances of SL selecting him. Not sure when they announce their squad mind you.'

  • For me the most joyous thing to come out of last night was that at no point did we resort to using "The Dark Arts" for which we've (unfortunately imho) become famous.

Even at 3 up there was no obvious time-wasting; no tieing up of keepers laces, no strange injuries which necessitated treatment from the sidelines with liberal applications of a magic spray.

  • Bearing in mind the difficulty we had 10-15 (?) years ago coping with Stockport’s extreme physicality, it was great to see how well we coped with that side of the game last night. Their bearded central striker spent most of the first half grappling with Joe Low, ultimately showing remarkable strength in hauling him to the deck. But Joe won the overall battle hands down.

  • Stockport 1 Reading 4

    Stockport 0 Wycombe 5!!!!!!

Had to double cheek that scoreline from yesterday. Well done on reaching the top, keep it up. Just goes to show the gulf between our clubs at the moment, thanks to our owner who continues to get someone to fund the club until he decides to not sell the club to them.

(As you already know, we lost 4--1 there).

  • Talking of physicality, if there was one aspect of Kone’s game that I thought needed improvement, it was his ability to withstand challenges from behind when he has his back to goal, so I was delighted to see how well he stood up to some very robust (diplomatic word) attention last night. If he can keep improving in this respect he will become a superb all round striker.

  • Don't worry mate, we promise not to beat you 9-1....probably.

  • I just made the point yesterday about why matchday threads tend to be longer after a defeat (as there is more to "fix") and it is testament to what a special game that was that we are in the midst of (for us) a long thread!

  • That’s perfect for a new banner in the terrace. The 1887 please make it happen.

  • I've noticed that whenever you do it's exclusively games that we have won

  • What I love about being a Wycombe fan is that there are no expectations, and every win is savoured. Especially ones like last night.

  • That stood out for me as well. I have always thought that Richard seemed to be unable to hold up the ball under pressure but last night he did hold it up time and again.

Richard is improving very quickly and at 21 years of age, he is a massive prospect.

  • Jasper is a nice name

  • I’ve noticed that you never criticise referees whether we’ve won, lost or drawn. Were you one in an earlier life?

  • I thought the way he grew (physically) in statue from when he signed to the end of last season was a sign that after a full preseason in him he could (and I hoped) would turn into a bit of a monster for defenders to come up against.

He’s only getting better and better. It’s really hard to remember he is only 21. They way he plays currently you could easily say he has the presence and maturity of a player that’s been in the league for 5 to 10 season inho
