@DrCongo - Possible Bug?
Couldn't see a thread to report this so hope this is the right place...
When I click on a thread, it no longer takes me to my last viewed message so I can pick up where I left off. Instead, it takes me to the last message in the thread and I have to manually scroll up from there and try to work out where the new messages begin. First world problems and all that, but it gets more annoying the more new messages there are.
I'm using Android if that matters. Is this a wider bug, or just me?

You're not alone @Last_Quarter, it's the same for me.
The solid line in a thread that used to indicate where new posts started seems no longer to be functioning as it did.
I thought it was just me.
It was doing that for me during the week, and just as I was considering a post like this it cleared up and I'm fine now
Thought it was just me too. I'm on Android but I have the same issue on my PC. I wondered if it was due to being logged-on on multiple devices but that hasn't sorted it. Weirdly it's not an issue on every thread but it is for the majority of them. Is there a @drcongo in the house?
Same problem for me on all my devices.
And for me, but at least I know I'm not alone.
Working on iOS FWIW.
Of course 💣 🏃 🙈
Same problem when viewing Gasroom via my laptop. Hope you can resolve.
Lol, spoke too soon... doing it again now !
Hello. Are those having problems using Chrome by any chance? I can't reproduce this here on my laptop or phone on any of my 9 different browsers, but I don't have Chrome to test with and there's not a chance in hell that I'd install it. My guess is a Chrome profile sync bug.
Yes, Chrome on an android device
I have Microsoft Edge on my laptop
Thanks @drcongo. It's the Samsung Internet app for me. I've just checked Chrome and I also have the same issue there though.
Hmmmm. Very odd. Can you check that the URL when you click it has
#latest
at the end? If you're logged in, the thread titles on the home page should all have#latest
at the end of their URL, but it's possible that some new "feature" in Chrome / Chrome-based browsers (like Edge) is removing it.Yes - URL is https://gasroom.org/discussion/9095/drcongo-possible-bug#latest but still only the last post is below the thick line and others unread are above it
Ditto
Ooooh, I bet I know what this is. I think Chrome is aggressively pre-loading the links on the home page in the background, which means that by the time you click on them, #latest is the very last post because, technically it is, it already loaded the other unreads before. There's some instructions on turning off pre-rendering here: https://superuser.com/a/394611 though that thread is very old so this pre-rendering might be a different setting.
OK, so a bit of reading suggests that Google have introduced something called "speculative pre-rendering" which is obviously every bit as stupid as it sounds. Honestly the best advice I can give here is to stop using Chrome because at this point it is essentially spyware - there are plenty of really good browsers around that shouldn't be affected by this - Firefox, Mullvad, Zen, if you're on Windows / Android, if you're on Mac / iOS then Safari is considerably better than Chrome anyway.
Swapped to using Firefox and this has fixed the issue for me
I think that's very rude calling @drcongo a bug!
If you're loyal to Chrome and bleed red, yellow, green and blue, go to:
Settings, then Privacy and security
Then under 'Preload pages' select 'No preloading'
That worked for me thanks, except I found it under...
'settings' - then 'performance' - then turn off preloading
Like @drcongo I would never recommend either Chrome or Edge to my worst enemy farless someone I had time for...
My preference is Firefox no problems to report despite my heavily aggressive approach to security.
This worked for me, thanks very much.
I've also downloaded Firefox, so will give that a go as well
I feel like computers being unable to do what they are told as they are far too busy doing what they think you might want (or they can sell you) based on developers poorly executing what was only ever going to be a bad guess is our AI based future.
Might go down the pub while they still exist.
AI is still at the stage of being a load of liberal arts graduates hiding behind a curtain telling Google what to say. Real AI (which will demand the destruction of the human race) is still a few years away. Sadly.
It reached peak "if you aren't doing it you must" catchphrase salesy bullshit about a year ago but you are right most of that isn't intelligent at all
A lot of it It's has been around for decades, some very basic language recognition attached to some very generic faqs and a bit of prediction based on the fact you might do something more than once. There is some very clever stuff going on in things like disease and fraud prevention but there is much more snake oil sales garbage, was an article recently in one of the papers about an AI exhibition with people selling all kinds of shite like AI toothbrushes.
Pleased to see that the bug has been corrected and my laptop is now once again showing all unread posts below the broad line.
Thanks
Never mind bugs. Dr Congo was pointless on Pointless yesterday.
African nations of seven letters or fewer.
I'm always pointless.
