Excellent performance, particularly out of possession. The obvious statement to make is that we need to be more clinical. We should have scored at least four. The caveat is that we’d much rather be clinical in a big league game like this coming Saturday. We’ve still got Hanlan to come back from injury and I’m sure we’ll dip our toes into the loan market as well. Very impressed.
We don’t get MoM threads on the cups do we. My vote goes to Pattenden anyway, thought he was excellent all round today. Kone and Udoh close behind, then Butch and Taff who both quietly got everything right all game.
Taff looked good, he should start Saturday, is Hartridge suspended already…and where is David Wheeler when we need him?
…and I know you all love Kone but he should have passed for Udoh in the first half instead of taking the greedy route to goal. And he needs a fair amount of chances to score one. To be fair, he creates a fair few chances so I’m picking him to start but tempering the optimism.
Sorry, I get lazy on the cup games! I have put one up now and will start doing it for cup games.
The scores just won't count in the season-long race for the Josh Scowen Memorial Trophy, which no-one but Scowen has actually won yet (Kone is going to have a go this season, clearly).
Regarding Pattenden, he is the sort of player I could imagine sticking around with us for a long time. Sadly I think Kone is so good that we will be lucky to get past two more seasons of him (and I bet next Summer is early Kone Watch), but Pattenden seems the sort of player who is about our level, and improving gradually, so that by the time he is sought out by other clubs, he is ingrained like McCarthy or Grimmer.
Whoever predicted that we are going to hand out a thrashing at some point is spot on. We have been a matter of inches from scoring 4 two games in a row.
I only watched 10 minutes of the first half and the second half. This report in the local newspaper underlines the extent of the gulf. It really does feel as though we are capable of scoring a lot more goals this season.

I enjoyed that. I love a game in a shit cup, a chance to see some players and tactics you might not normally, and the result doesn’t really matter.

Is that 5 times hitting the woodwork in 180 minutes + change? Remarkable. Efficient, professional performance, good stuff, into the next round
6 I think?
some interesting results tonight
PNL beat Posh,
Bolton draw with Mansfield - win 5-4 pens,
Crawley beat Swindon,
Colchester draw with Reading - win 4-3 pens,
Fleetwood beat WBA,
Pompey lose to Millwall,
Watford tonk MK
Barrow beat Port Vale

Try it, you might like it my gasroom brother.
I’ll enjoy the presence of my various social groups in real life. The ones I don’t have to pander to. cheers mate x
Yes those are related to yellow cards. Hartridge was a red.
Sheffield United have buried Wrexham.
Weird to think that PNL are a division above Posh now, and it actually would have been an upset the other way around! I can't get used to that.
doh - you’re right, it does say later in the same article that suspensions for reds carry across competitions
This is FOTMOB’s take, but they agree with you on Pattenden.
Didn’t see the game myself but good that Bakinson seems to have had a stronger showing this time.
Grimsby V Bradford - level 1 a piece after 90, ends up with Grimsby wininng the penalty shoot out 9-8
Walsall equalize at the death and then beat Exeter on penalties. Long way home for the Grecians.
Crystal Palace next please
Leahy was my MOTM. A real leader’s performance out there tonight.
Cock piss Hartridge
Let’s face it…Northampton Town ain’t that good.

League Cup highlights tomorrow night at 11.25pm. Shame, was looking forward to watching them tonight.
Can’t believe this post only has my one upvote.

It's that all important first win of the season though, if it injects a bit of confidence after the loss to Wrexham that's more important.

Failing that, I wouldn't mind QPR as I think we could take them in a belated revenge for being so QPR-ish.
Jasper outstanding. At last a wingback who can put in good crosses.

I was beginning to look forward to the second round (in a low key sort of way) until i remembered how depressing losing to Sutton last season was.
We have a much more settled solid squad now.
