Iconic commentary moments
Prompted by reliving that glorious night at Selhurst Park, and our friend @glasshalffull's wonderful commentary, what are your most iconic commentary moments from Wycombe games.
A few starters.
"They will not lay down and die!"
"Oh yes, Essandoh!"
"Gape... GOAL!"
"Bean with the shot..."
"Still David Carroll, he could go all the way here... oh what a goal!"
"It's an absolute pig if you're a Rovers fan."

Semi-relevant - first time I'd ever seen the own goal here https://www.instagram.com/reel/C58EPt4vAAB/?igsh=dXEyYXZyZ3k2bWI5
Phil and Bill's commentary for That Marcus Bean Goal will stay with me forever. It was absolutely perfect. In fact, the commentary for that whole match was so good that I can remember where I was and what I was doing for all the key moments as I went about a busy day with them in my headphones.
Bill Turnbull for the last 20 mins at Wembley - ‘Chairboys, Chairboys, Chairboys…’
@bluntphil when describing an opposition player in one of our games this season (can't remember which team):
''Well, he managed to walk off the pitch without falling over''.
Sticking with Phil - i've always loved his fondness for the informal adjective "incandescent".
Pete Couhig 's blasphemous halftime outburst.
I sincerely regret failing to keep a record of some of Phil's most quotable moments. I have laughed out loud many a time.
@Jonny_King described Killian Phillips earlier this season as being 'about 90% limb', which I thought was excellent.
Daddy Couhig at Morecambe
Oh, how could I forget @Jonny_King and his obscene tweet?
wasn't there one where Bill Turnbull was raging against a referee's decision before realising the free kick had been awarded our way?
Bill had the perfect amount of outraged bias to be the classic foil for Phil.
I’m sure there was a moment on iFollow coverage where Phil and Bill said we’d conceded a goal, then the stream cut off immediately afterwards, and a few minutes later it comes back on and we find out it was disallowed.
Wimbledon away in 14/15 or 15/16 I think.
Was that Kevin Couhig suggesting outrageously with less than ten minutes to go that, from a losing position, “the Wyc” could still win the game?
More moronic than iconic.
Hutch being confronted by locals at Man City was entertaining!
Was he on commentary at the time?
I’m intrigued. Can’t say I know Jonny well but, based on the few occasions I’ve chatted with him, I find it hard to believe that he’d deliberately utter an obscenity. Certainly not on commentary.
I'll let him explain that one...

As the YouTube description states:
"Royce Brownlie scores to send the away fans into raptures - but after receiving dog's abuse for the whole game, former Town and Oxford man Tommy Mooney has the last laugh - netting an injury time equaliser".
at the time Ballroom Bill said something along the lines of,
"Mooney Mooney what's the score, they were singing - they're not singing it now!"
You really have to read it in Sir Turnbull's iconic tones for it to have the full effect, but it was magic at the time, and probably exactly what everyone listening to the commentary was thinking - which is perfect really.
'That's basic moon knowledge' was a favourite from this season, after a tweet corrected Tim Peach's claim of there being a full moon.
I'm sure he was! I did listen to that game on the radio, so vaguely remember it (I think it's also detailed in the Small Town Dreams book). I believe a couple of youths tried to get to Hutch, who whilst on air, warned them off with a threat of a boot to the face, or something along those lines.
He intended to tweet that the goalkeeper’s gloves were stinging from a thumping shot.
Legendary!
Hutch's commentary on radio was must listen fare in the days you couldn't just click a button and watch every game. And you felt genuinely privileged it was available.
Hutch refusing to ever tell you what the current score was never failed to amuse.
Probably a mix of what @flymofrank would label "nauseating positivity" mixed in with forgetting English football isn't like one of those woeful American sports like basketball where you can make repeated scores quickly.
How the hell has something I said about two years ago become a go-to of yours? 😂
Because it's one of the most hilarious things I've ever read on here.
Thanks @flymofrank! @micra , it was as @Chris describes. I was trying to co-commentate whilst also doing Twitter updates (doing both very badly) and meant to type ‘thumping shot’, but Mr Qwerty in his wisdom chose to put the o and i keys next to each other…
Thanks @Glenny, I’d forgotten about that one!
I will put forward ‘You’re in the pressbox sir, you shouldn’t celebrate’ after a sniffy Oxford commentator took exception to Matt Cecil’s delight at a win at the Kassam a few years ago.
There was a match in particular that Phil and Bill were commentating on, and Blooms scored a goal…I genuinely got goosebumps listening to Bill commentating on the goal. I wish I knew which game it was so that I could listen back.
Whoever was on admin at Charlton for this match deserves a shoutout
