What young Senda is talking about is "Redundant Acronym Syndrome", which is itself not an accurate description because often what it refers to are not acronyms (ATM being such an example)
On a slight tangent, I always find the band 'Eagles' difficult to deal with, because it is so natural to say 'The Eagles'. Saying 'I am off to see Eagles tonight' sounds like an overnight camping expedition in the mountains.

I could see Gaz managing in the MSL.
Interesting. not the MLS?
Pedant alert, but it's just MLS, not 'the MLS' (back me up here @Shev)

Never struck me as a cricket fan but you never know
It's Premier League not 'The Premier League' but we never say of a team 'they play premier league' we say 'they play in the premier league'.
MLS stands for Major League Soccer, so the 'the' is completely unnecessary.
You obviously didn't bother to read my comment...yes pedantic.
It's like calling HMRC 'the HMRC' 🤷
Last few games have been Football without the Rock n' Roll imho.
He plays in the major league soccer.
Doesn't sound right does it.
N football.
Shows how much interest I have in ‘soccer’ across the pond
It's like saying The ATM machine. A bit.
Gareth's music career will see him busking near a fair few ATM machines.
Oh god, I remember an English teacher of mine going on a right old rant about those (I forget the term).
It's called tautology.
Don't tell anyone the PIN number you use at the ATM machine.
The Premier League, the ATM at Tesco, we'll win the next home game.
All are grammatical correct - and hopefully true!
This is correct, as far as I am aware, though some people still say 'the MLS' anyway!
no it isn't, tautology is something different.
What young Senda is talking about is "Redundant Acronym Syndrome", which is itself not an accurate description because often what it refers to are not acronyms (ATM being such an example)
PIN number is the best. And PAC code.
Tautology is saying the same thing in two different ways.
So, for example, when people talk about a PIN number, that's tautological because the 'N' in PIN already stands for 'number'.
On a slight tangent, I always find the band 'Eagles' difficult to deal with, because it is so natural to say 'The Eagles'. Saying 'I am off to see Eagles tonight' sounds like an overnight camping expedition in the mountains.
ATM is an initialism, I think?
We had this debate about (the) Ramones before - definitely more natural to add the preposition even if it's not officially in the band's name.
...and I just learnt something new! (I had no idea it was just Ramones).
"Number" and "number" isn't saying the same thing in "two different ways" (the "different" itself there being a tautology).
It's just saying the same thing.
And The Smiths changed their name to Smiths but nobody apart from Janice Long ever called them that.
No, you're wrong. And here's the evidence: Grammar Tips: Tautology | Proofed's Writing Tips
