My first ever game at Adams Park was a friendly against Sutton in 1991. A match I can find no record of. I remember we lost, had lots of trialists playing . I assume it was pre season as I then went on to watch all of the 91/92 season.
Exactly that! Only got two to go again. Barrow and Sutton. Was immensely annoyed last night on my way back from the Leeds game when they announced the draw.
@Ed_ Walthamstow Avenue doesn’t exist anymore but Walthamstow FC does. They play in the Southern League Division One nowadays but get reasonable gates of around 350.
Just a line of poetry that I liked but have butchered. The original is "I hold a fast fading photograph in my slow fading hands"
Albert Camus is better for a literary/football mix as he was a goalkeeper. Who can forget the opening lines of his most famous work, The Onsider.
Hanlan scored today. Or maybe yesterday, I don't know. I got a tweet from the Wycombe account: "Hanlan scored. Video tomorrow. Faithfully yours." That doesn't mean anything. Maybe it was yesterday.
@A_Worboys@ReturnToSenda Thanks for pointing that out, I had not read about their demise. I can't precisely remember my first match but it was very possibly againts them - a large win against Walthamstowe around the mid 80's, I think it was mid winter, it was cold and wet and I had scorched my palette on a very hot sausage in a bun but the heat delivered was very welcome and it tasted delicious. I think that first occasion was the zenith of my Chairboy catering experiences. I remember my dad pointing out Declan Link to me as having recently returned from the US, which seemed very exotic, not entirely sure whether that was the same game or whether I have conflated events. If we can host their modern day equivalent, it will be close enough to raise a smile for me.
Walthamstow Avenue were our arch rivals in the Isthmian league ages ago and I remember Frank Avery being sent off against them which resulted in a mini pitch invasion brought to a halt by the swift intervention of PC "Dodger" Green. I see that "in 1986–87 the club finished bottom of the Premier Division of the Isthmian League, and were relegated to Division One.[2] The 1987–88 was the club's last one, with the club merging into Leytonstone/Ilford, who were later renamed Redbridge Forest." They merged in turn and are now Dagenham and Redbridge. All very complicated and luckily the Wanderers have never gone that way.
@Ed_, that was probably the 7-1 home win on a cold January day in 1987. I remember how one-sided the match was, on a frozen pitch. Declan Link made his first start after returning to the club, and scored the final goal. Other scorers were o.g., Barrett, Westy, Durham, Seacole (2).

Some little sweetener for a plum 3rd round draw too?
Although that does risk motivating the opposition and asking for a fall.
That's what you get when you make a rare serious post🤣
Sounds like a decent feature request tbh
Just need Walthamstowe Ave in the FAC and our trip down memory lane will be complete.
Do they still exist? Not enough clubs with 'Avenue' in their name. Bradford PA the only other one which comes to mind.

I’ve always wondered why they’re occasionally styled as Bradford (Park Avenue).
The brackets feel a little derogatory don't they
There you are @Stewie63. A friendly on a Saturday a month into the season. Can't remember why! (Where's @ChasHarps when you need him...)

If you watch closely, Martin whispered to the ball 'ah it's about time we played Sutton again.'. And Sutton it was.

If we’re on the poetry:
Into my heart an air that kills
From yon far country blows:
What are those blue remembered hills,
What spires, what farms are those?
That is the land of lost content,
I see it shining plain,
The happy highways where I went
And cannot come again.
And out of the bag the little ball came
'can Wycombe please play Sutton United again?'
Mark Chapman, ignorant, such a pain
Treating our Lord with such disdain
For the memories of those days will not wane
Down Green Gander's winding lane
Sunshine, sleet, or in rain
We'll make that Wembley trip again

All this talk about fake accounts but no one has spotted that @LX1 is clearly @oilysailor
I wish I earned the kind of wedge he must be on. And had a dog.

Would swap both for a pint with James Richardson though.
As anyone around our age would I'm sure @floyd
Richardson or Agnew I reckon. Both dream jobs.
I met Agnew in an Adelaide stadium stairwell. Not a pleasant person.
Never meet your heroes I guess
It's actually @Kim_il_Swan who is oilysailor, and I am saying that purely based on how much it will wind him up.

Prob is but yeah if not either way will 'fuck with his mind'
Superb
Agnew is everything you imagine a public school tosser who had the good fortune @floyd
