I have never gambled and am not a fan of it, but even putting that aside, I struggle to grasp why people who have already made a fortune get addicted to it. There is so much out there to see a do, and this is the best you can come up with? Then again, I suppose the answer is right there in what I said, sadly - addiction.
Yeah, addiction doesn't work like that, and if you're prepared for whatever reason to gamble everything you have that only gets exaggerated as a footballer with money, and access to money.
I am sure the Gambling Companies who sponsor football teams come in and tell the young players with time on their hands to bet responsibly and set limits.
I’ve often thought that if you spend your professional career hearing thousands of people chant your name, and roar on your every touch, normal life must seem unbearably dull. I wonder if gambling is one of the few ways to recreate that rush.
Or perhaps. slightly more cynically, no amount of money is ever ‘enough.’
Part of the problem for young footballers is simply having too much time on their hands.
Gambling is often not about hoping to make lots of money, it’s part competitive - showing you know more about sport than the banker - and part making sports you are not otherwise emotionally involved in far more interesting.
Probably had to go a bit higher as people would moan at the huge delay in the punishment coming out, plus he can serve 3months of it over the close season.
Seeing that Toney ban, on a night where a club facing 100+ charges are taking a huge step towards a treble, you wonder what huge potential punishment they could get.
Odds on a few thousand pounds and taking years to come to that decision? When the wonderful Pep is off managing his next nigh on impossible to fail project?
The.problem with gambling is that these benevolent wealth creators know they see not going to make a billion.pounds a year out of people who.like a flutter, bet responsibly and set limits. Their business model (backed by sophisticated computer algorithms) is to target those who cannot and smooth the path to penuary even if the punters know they are being reckless.
So he’s out until 2024. Does sound pretty brutal. Hope he’s already well into counselling and whatever else is needed to enable him to resist temptation.
There’s a selfish element there. I enjoy watching Brentford and Toney’s contribution is obviously immense.
You do see some horrible cases of addiction. People talking about being up at 2am betting on some obscure sport in a foreign market and doing their wages an hour after being paid.
Was reading some twitter posts saying it's amazing how normalised this feels. Just taking apart a 14 time European cup winning outfit like they're some league 2 team.
Media concentrating on all the amazing management, players etc, utterly silent on the charges and the 100+ charges elephant in the room.
I've heard tell...which may of course be bullshine....that companies are well aware of footballers and managers who are betting on the game and are quite happy to keep it quiet until it looks like they are stopping or being councilled to stop...at which point the news 'leaks'.
Whether that's the likes of Madrid and Barcelona recreating the European super league idea to get some parity on income, or them actually properly looking into that set of charges I don't know. But something will change in time.
There's always been a few teams who have spells dominating, but this is something else. It looked like Chelsea might do this in the early 2000s, but City's money input and level of operation is streets ahead of what they were doing.

seems about right. Barton got 15 mths if I remember for roughly 4 times the number of offences. All players know the rules….

Wonder how many times he's been found guilty of different things, got another 3 matches touchline ban today.
The only problem is that he made 232 mistakes, and I'm not sure in football terms 27 is young.
Seems to me that the length of the ban is, in some ways, set so it starts immediately but actually has an effect next season.
He can return to play on 17th January and can train with Brentford from 17th September - according to the BBC.
This parody account is worse than our tory landlord.

Apparently it matters more when you bet on it…

I can't like them as a club, but this City team really are something else.
People always want more, it's human nature.

I'm always surprised footballers, who knows it's against the rules, repeatedly and obviously place massive sets of bets in their own name!
I find the whole thing utterly depressing. Like manufacturing cyborgs which will dominate the game for years to come.
I mean, there's not much they can say about that for legal reasons.
Go on Cov!
Something will change that stops it in time.

I can see it now down the line...
lots of talk of how it was "well known in the industry" what was going on etc etc.
232 mistakes.
The ban is effectively 5 months of the playing season. He’ll miss about 20 League games which could put Brentford right in the relegation scrap.
It's an odd case. It seems like this first broke about 6months ago, so they've spent a hell of a time deciding on this and investigating.
There's clearly room to think hope he gets help, while knowing it's right he's got a big ban.
Okay, how's this for a stat:
In 2017-18, Accrington, Luton, Wycombe and Coventry were promoted from L2.
Next season, there will be one team in each of the four divisions.
Similarly mad: Luton and Cov were in League One with Scunthorpe in 2018/19.
Five seasons later, one of them will be FIVE divisions above Scunthorpe.
