Sorry I’m a bit pi**sed having just got back from a brilliant afternoon with fantastic weather at the Cross Keys. Just wanted to say how proud I am of this fantastic little football club that I have followed for over 50 years. Also what an amazing community we have here on this forum, no entitled wa***kers like you see on other sites. Have a great summer guys and gals, let’s go again in August and give the likes of Derby Cunty a bloody nose. Love you all, remember we’re all after the same thing. Sorry again for rambling.
The complaints regarding last weeks performance were definitely noted, and today we saw a squad that showed us that they do care. Hopefully next year we will have an enjoyable season. Promotion would be great, but staying in the top 10 will still be an achievement we can be pleased with. Hopefully the management will control the financial side wisely.
Bloom-Ball might suit him better with less emphasis on arial assault. I do worry that his quick of foot does not match his quick of thought. He so often is slow to react to a pass that the chance is gone and if you are playing on the last man you need to be a) onside and b) ready to burst to a variety of passes. Wing, Freeman, Scowen and Wheeler are very capable and smart passers of the ball and we need a striker capable or reading this. Hopefully Hanlan.
Hanlan has been a good wide option. I think his worth has suffered from his poor time played out of position myself. Will be happy to see him again next term.
Agree with what you say as a wide player. Happy for him to stay as a squad player who could be dangerous off the bench maybe replacing a tiring GMac. Not a starter for me
36 games, 3 goals, 1 assist. He's played out wide in a number of those games. Hasn't ripped up any trees. He's a big call for Matt B as he was one that we spent money on. Not silly money but money.
But his crossing is sub-McCarthy. I like the guy, and love watching him mysteriously come away with the ball from a really tight crowd, but I have to admit I'm struggling to see him as either a striker or a winger.
The perfect position for someone who you correctly point out lacks some of the more traditional skills of either position.
Whereas the wide attacker position just never really worked well for Kashket for example.
Hope he fixes up with a decent club. He's had a miserable season at Gillingham for different reasons, but surely still has it in him to be a league 2 goalscoring threat.
I am just not sure we can coach him into the role we need him to play. If we persist with Vokes as target man (which we will) Hanlan will need to play off him more effectively. He doesn't seem to read the all important 2nd balls. Anis was very sharp on the 2nd ball and when we had Bayo and Kashket together they were on the same wavelength too and it yielded results. Hanlan is either static or in the wrong place and needs to be more trouble to defenders. We simply can't have an attacker in the starting line up with such poor stats, we got rid of 2/3 of those in January.
We have been a team where everyone is expected to run through walls and cover back, and our main striker also isn't particularly quick or prolific (despite other qualities) so the wide players need to chip in with goals and assists and both hard defensive work and bringing the ball out of defense.
Chicken and egg scenario perhaps but a bit like Kashket if you do job 1 and score loads of goals the rest is forgiven, if you don't someone else might be better at everything else.

I live for this unhinged sensible stuff
I lost it at Derby C*nty 🤣
You say this like it's a point anyone is debating.
Mawson retired cruelly midseason.
Mellor made zero impact and was loaned to basement of league 2.
Willis was a filler part time signing and didn't manage one 90!

I wonder if that is the last we see of Hanlan?
He's got another year on his contract
Oh dear !

Surprised nobody has commented on the happy coincidence of me appearing on the same page (one) as Super Sam Vokes.
First thought is those are some poor numbers.
Second reaction is our main striker has just about scored 6 or 7, and we don't have anyone in double digits for goals or assists!
In a 50+ game season! So it's not like we're a team smothered in luxurious attacking play.
That said, he's one of a number who need to step up next season. Would help his cause if we played him left wing where he's surely been best for us.
I thought that was Wing’s 10th goal yesterday but I’m probably well wide of the mark.
Wikipedia confirms that it was.
Surely Hanlan is a natural winger not a number 9.
Knew I needed an "aside from Wing and maybe Mehmeti" disclaimer..
But his crossing is sub-McCarthy. I like the guy, and love watching him mysteriously come away with the ball from a really tight crowd, but I have to admit I'm struggling to see him as either a striker or a winger.
He's a wide attacking player in a 4-3-3.

I liked Kashket, would much prefer him to DeBarr.
I think you've got to look at Hanlan as an inside forward rather than a winger. The onus to provide crosses should be more on the full-backs.
He needs to score more goals then.
Possibly - and I think he will if used correctly

What you gain in finishing, you lose in barges though.

I think we should adapt our game-plan to knocking it around at the back a bit, launching it forward and aim to have around 33% possession.
