In appreciation of David Wheeler
I know we all love him, but what a player Wheeler is, and what a fine history with us. A few highlights:
- Joins us in the summer before our incredible promotion to the Championship.
- Scores against Fleetwood in the playoff semis.
- Scores the only goal in our first ever Championship win.
- Can play practically anywhere, and does so enthusiastically.
- Has passion for issues off the pitch and is tremendously articulate in doing highlighting them.
- Has been fantastic this season, in what has been a very difficult campaign in many ways.
I am so glad we have him signed up - a jack of all trades and an absolute consummate professional.

Such a good player / bloke.
Good to see him cast off the utility player title a bit in recent weeks as that can hold players back as much as it benefits them, he's an excellent player in midfield and worthy of being one of the first names on the teamsheet regardless of who else is available.
You forgot his iconic celebration.
If only the fans did a driving conga line whenever he scores too.
Or tequila shots
If he feels so inclined I imagine he will make a great manager on day. Our manager even.
He’s headed for chairman of the PFA I reckon.
Well said. Wheels has been one of my favourite players since joining and I felt a little for him last season with lack of minutes, so it’s great to see him on fire this season and rewarded with a new contract
153 appearances for us too - not bad! Just 19 away from eclipsing his 171 for Exeter.
He once out-scored Ollie Watkins in a season at Exeter
He comes across as a top bloke.
Starting to see how he got 20 odd goals in a season at Exeter. Is he signed up for next year? I lose track.
Loves a goal against Franchise…
Yes, he signed back up recently. Great news!
It would interesting to see Vokes and Wheeler playing together up front. 30 goals minimum between them next season
Was fantastic to see him out on the right against Cambridge, he looked like a proper winger. He's been a revelation this season, easily his best with us.
Always does. And what a transformation in his performances this season. I am on record (a year or so ago) as not being able to see what he brought to the table but my goodness have I had to eat my hat.
I still have another hat which I’m hoping to have to consume at some stage over the next six months. Afraid I don’t look further ahead these days but I’m still defying the odds.
Having been lucky enough to get to know Wheels through some charity bits we've done, I can confirm that, above all else, he's just a very nice bloke.
If I still got names on the back of kits, I'd get his
Sorry but that thumbs down confirms my contention that some people do it for purely personal reasons, unrelated to what’s been said.
Brought a smile. 😊
I've always admired him for his worth ethic and versatility, not to mention his off field causes. This season though he's really shown us what a good player he is. Certainly his best season for us, so glad he's signed up for next season.
Anyone committed to the environment and electoral reform is good in my book. I seem to recall he has decent music taste too.
what's his favourite album, @MindlessDrugHoover ? (If you don't know, just have an amusing guess, and when @ReturnToSenda is next having a coffee with him, he can find out for sure.)
I'll wrongly but hopefully guess at 'The Codex Necro' by Anaal Nathrakh. It'll probably be something like The Arctic Monkeys after all that.
I would expect @micra that it might be from the type of person who posts ‘stick to football mate’ when Wheels tweets his views on climate change or voting systems.
Not sure why a footballer is expected to stay quiet on such issues when no-one else is.
Politicians love talking about the soccer footballing and how they love Aston Villa Ham Town and nobody posts 'Stick to fiddling expenses and taking money from lobbying groups mate'
Glad Wheels will be with us next year, been a fav of mine since signing and this season has shown his class game after game.
He's ambassador/patron of the disabled supporters' association, which I think is a first-time thing for us?
He also has a senior ambassadorial type role with the Professional Footballer’s’ Association but I can’t remember what it is.
