A few on here will remember Jan Tomaszewski. I watched that match against Poland at Wembley in 1973 which England needed to win in order to qualify for the 1974 World Cup. Described by Brian Clough before kickoff as a clown, Tomaszeswki defied the odds and somehow contrived to keep England out.
Before yesterday’s game, @glasshalfempty played the Clough role with comments about Max Stryjek’s inadequacy, based on having watched him about a dozen times.
One swallow doesn’t make a summer of course but, on the strength of yesterday’s performance, the biggest problem we might have, ironically, could be holding on to him - not how well he holds on to the ball.
I was at that game as a young lad with my Dad. I think we only ever went to two international games together - that and a friendly “3v6” game when we joined the EEC. Happy days.
I remember being allowed to stay up to watch that game and we went round to my grandad’s to watch it on his colour tv, like we did the FA Cup Finals around that time. I used my Hendon v Enfield Wembley ticket stub from the previous year (my dad took me to the Amateur Cup Final to show me what could’ve been) as a template, and drew a Poland ticket in the same style, which my grandad checked at the front door, before letting me in. My gran brought in flat lemonade and animal shaped biscuits at half time.
That is the best metric for assessing shot-stopping performance. He also comes out on top when that's adjusted for the number of shots faced. An absolute masterstroke of a signing.
I remember commenting when we signed him that one of the things that stood out on his showreel was the extraordinary number of times that his superbly rapid reflexes enabled him to get some part of his body behind shots which then ricocheted a healthy distance from him. We’ve seen that a few times already.
Both Max's superb positioning and build are not disimiliar to Martin Taylor's. He certainly makes the goal look a lot smaller to oncoming opponents than any of the ridiculous garish keeper shirts that have been introduced in recent years.

Struggling to think of a better goal keeping debut. He simply didn't put a foot or glove wrong.
Expletive deleted ?
At least no one made a hasty judgement about Max before he'd even
kickedhandled a ball for us!So he made six mistakes (possibly) in over 46 games !
how many outfield players made less ?
A very very strong first performance... excellent stuff! Welcome max... keep it up and you will be a Wycombe legend before you know it
Wow what a save from that header, just seen it on the highlights.
My opinion: He's good.
Those two saves early on gave us a springboard for the win. It is good to have a solid keeper and Mawson getting stronger every game.
Well done Max!!!!!

It’s quite a thing to be compared to the late Brian Clough. I would say I wasn’t quite as damning in my assessment however.
Tomaszewski comments…not Cloughie’s finest hour.

Pales into insignificance compared to his Hillsborough comments! Though I like to think by then it was his cirrhosis talking.
Liver let live, so to speak.

Oh, poor old Hunter and Shilts... 😫
If you love the xG metric (and it seems to be a Gasroom fave) then you’ll love this…

A masterstroke indeed.

He is quite a sturdy chap!
Takes no prisoners (apart from Diving Danny’s successor on Saturday).
if / when he improves his kicking he’ll be fantastic for this level
Nathan who?

Not just the best goalkeeper in L1, but the second best in the 92 (apart from not being able to do a Cruyff turn and banana kick out to the wing).
That's all very well, but 'The Bishop Fiasco' cost us the play-offs you know...
And let’s not forget that he was described by one poster on here as one of the worst keepers in the division.
I think Max has been our best signing this season ! He's been magnificent
Haha. Cretinous scenes.
