@StrongestTeam I thought Pierre came in for the run-in at the back end of the Torquay season...he definitely played in the Bristol Rovers game and GA was incensed by the time it took the medical team to strap his Tesco hammer up after a clash with Harrold. He then signed in the close season (?), and I recall thinking that he and Tools would make an awesome combo...so Leon Johnson left, but then wasn't that when Tools agitated for a move and did not start the next season (hence we got Aaron's Brentford buddy Mawson late on) before heading off to Crewe. Or am I completely losing my tiny mind?
I think Pierre might have played at left back in the Torquay game with Johnson and Tools in the middle.
About the only time he really did play in that position, but it enabled us to get more of our better players on the pitch at the same time - we didn’t have too many that season.
Pierre at right back and Daniel Rowe at left back wasn't it?
Either way it was four central defenders strung out along the back four
As much as people have reminisced about that day, and from the final whistle onwards it was amazing, that remains the least I have ever enjoyed a game of football in my life. It was absolutely torturous
Yep, who could forget Mawson! I suppose he was the utterly hidden gem, whereas the others we largely knew and were excited about. The irony that the best of them all was the "who's this" guy, unveiled an hour before kick off.
But yes, him and Paris, mean even less chance of another summer ever matching that one.
Such a strange season, as for large parts of it we were basically operating with in effect a 14/15 man squad. There were time we had extra numbers on the bench, but some were literally just there for a name on a sheet, like the loanee we got from Rotherham accompanying Danny Rowe. Or Baz, or the odd other one here and there.
That's right. On loan initially, looked really good, and we were delighted to bring him in properly the next summer.
Think he played left back at Torquay for some reason didn't he? Rowe and Stewart at centre back? Could be mis remembering.
But Stewart had his wasted season, contract stand off for half of it, then had a few games at Crewe. While we never looked back with Mawson and Pierre brilliant.
I always forget Pierre from the seemingly endless list of Wycombe and Brentford connections. Sam Saunders obviously another one from that time - Beany had been there not long before, too.
You could be right @StrongestTeam but he did hang about not playing as the season started didn't he? Was that just him waiting until someone came in for him if we had no hold on him? My memory is admittedly hazy. I too thought that the Bristol game was the worst I had felt at a football match for a long time...but I had already signed up for the next season whatever as I realised they would really need my money! I suppose given we would probably be playing on the Rye if we had gone down I would have lost the lot!
Yep, truly blessed that season, yet the ultimate disappointment. Conceding on 120 and then pens. What a ride though.
Was my highest amount of aways ever. Probably a mix of realising how close we'd come to not having the privileges of being able to follow Wycombe in the league, a decent set of away day pals available, and a superb team.
With games being available on the laptop, and some of those matchday pals now doing other things, i doubt I'd ever match that total again.
And Sammy Wood although he'd been here longer, Brentford were very good to us. Also seem to remember a story that Mawson wasn't even first choice to come in loan, someone else was in line but got injured.
I heard the same too. We got Mawson almost as an apology from Brentford as our 1st choice wasn't available. If what I found is true, GA & Dobbo hadn't even heard of this Mawson lad but had little choice. I think the 1st they/the rest of the squad met him was at a services on the M4 on the way to Newport? 🤷
Hadn't ever heard that, but talk about a sliding doors moment!
It's amazing to think in the 2 seasons before joining us, and being such an incredible star player in league 2 that he was 3rd in the divisional player of the year awards (unheard of for a defender?), that he spent spells at Maidenhead in the conference south.
I was at an away game, can’t recall where, and the man in the row in front hears me reading off scores. He asks me the Brentford score and explains his son out there is on loan from them. Oh your Alfie’s dad then I say. We had a brief chat and I said I thought he looked like a great player. His dad said he was really enjoying playing for us and we returned our attention to the second half kickoff.
Very sadly we miss tomorrow as Her Indoors has given me her covid.

Brilliant 😂
Deleted comment, almost certainly have the timelines wrong there. Very confusing when so many players have several spells.
.
It's the wrong thread for such an insightful look into Joey Barton head @StrongestTeam
If anything I think you're overestimating him.

Got a feeling we got Mawson in when Gary Doherty got injured just before the start of the season.

Think that gets talked up, he didn't have to agitate for a move he was out of contract.

Not forgetting the arrival of Nico Yannaris & Sam Saunders, both on loan, for the second half of the season.

we had to pay again which was fine. It was all fine. Oh so fine.

What was our connection with Brentford at the time?

Just mateying up with their manager Mark Warburton.

JJ now up to 382 appearances, now in 19th position on the all-time list having overtaken fellow legend Mark West on Saturday.
Next in his sights - this fine fellow...
