I also think both. If he's been on trial for two weeks, then that's roughly when Ainsworth started rewording Alfie's injury status from 'back soon' to something like 'not yet'. Then we had the Tafa off the ball injury last week (when Willis had already been training and played in a behind closed doors game). I think it's both.
Thompson is gutting. He was out for so long. Started to get some minutes back on the pitch and he's back out injured again. Can't imagine the pain of having to go back to the treatment room again after you've just spent 12 months in it.
You think we consciously chose to have three centre halves on the bench? And only one (arguable) central midfielder? I've not heard of players being rested from the matchday squad entirely. I think he's injured again.
I'm not sure Gareth Ainsworth sees things quite as black and white as that. He's explained in his post-match interview why he named Jack Wakely, Chris Forino-Joseph and Jordan Willis on the bench today.
If Curtis Thompson felt tightness in his muscles during the week, then resting him is the obvious and sensible thing to do. He didn't play for ten months, so he can't just go at full pelt again.
I suspect he'll be rested again on Tuesday, avoiding a long coach journey, and then will be back in the squad for Bolton Wanderers.
Looking at the comments from Sunderland fans and Coventry fans, Willis could be a real gem of signing if we can keep him fit. He could be just what we need. 👍👍
"It was Willis' first competitive appearance since February 2021, when he suffered a major patellar tendon injury in a Sunderland fixture at Shrewsbury Town."
Classy comments and a very positive read. If his rehabilitation is complete and it’s not a recurring-type injury we could have picked up another class player
I was hoping with three centre backs on the bench that when we went 3-1,up, we would bring on all of them on and play a back seven with Josh in front of them!

He's a good player, could be a good signing for us. My only other thought...is it a rule now that we have to sign players with a history of injuries?
Yes, especially if they're a centre-back!
Why else would a player of any quality still be available on a free?
A good signing, but it hardly fills you with hope that Mawson will be back any time soon
Hang on a minute, the Sunderland fans actually rate him! Should we be worried?
-wage demands
-location preferences (for family reasons etc)
-weighing up their options
-don't want to play under a particular manager
-personal issues
-unseen health issues (such as mental health)
etc etc
Every player has quality, the question is how much ;)
Makes me think, who's out for the season? Mawson or Taf?
Sadly, my money’s on Mawson.
Sadly I’m thinking both. If it’s Mawson it might well signal the end of his career.

Didn't Gaz say the other day words to the effect of 'everyone is in contention' for today's game?
If it was that, I think they'd tell us, so I'm taking it as a positive for once that they're keeping us in the dark...
Taf's looked a classic muscle pull, so it'd have to be incredibly severe to be a 3monther. But it could easily be half of that or slightly more.
Mawson felt worrying by the time he'd missed 2 games to be honest. Really hope that's not the end of him either here, or altogether!
But even if the worst happened, hearing he'd signed and having him for 6months was still brilliant.

🤞
From that clip, it suggests Taf actually had got over what looked like a muscle pull but has picked something else up?
And where's Gape? Not been seen for ages now either?
Oh well, 3-2 is all that matters today.
I really feel for Gape and Thompson. Absolute legends in the promotion year, but their careers absolutely blighted by injury since.

Is there any official confirmation that Curtis Thompson is injured again?
I think it's far more likely he was rested today. The risk of muscle injuries following long-term injury is far greater.
I took Gaz saying that he's got Mawson, Thompson and Gape "in the background" to mean they're not far off. Bloody hope so.

What was his injury? It must have been a big one to keep him out for 2 years

In our management team we trust!

You forget @Mr67 there’s no need for 7 at the back with Josh in front of them!
He’s done sadly, retirement incoming.
