Jack Grimmer has been great recently, if we could keep everyone fit and in form we'd be fine, another CB might either be needed or be entirely wasted. Another prospect that wants a chance might be best.
Tbh if anyone leaves it's an opportunity to either free up some £ towards someone else or for savings.
He's been better recently too tbh , I only worry about him when he's not playing well and someone thinks that despite that he can play in every position. Can't remember if he was a good CB or midfielder at any point, Just please not LB.
He's defensively iffy (not an enormous problem in itself, but we don't always cover for that well enough) and still lacks one of the most fundamental aspects of being a full-back: crossing ability. It does amaze me that he's been signed by two Championship clubs.
McCarthy lacks an even more fundamental footballing ‘skill’ he can’t trap a ball! No close control. All he has is fitness/effort, which of course Gaz values above all else. When he wears the captains arm band my heart sinks.
Some are falling into the trap of presenting a £3m loss for this accounting year as fact. The owners still have some control over the losses the club ends up making, including any purchases and sales during this transfer window.
It seems this summer will see our playing budget return to pre-Championship level. In terms of safeguarding the future of the club that has to be a good thing.
There are so many variables between now and June I’m not sure there’s any merit in some of the conjecture. Top of the list being the potential sale of the club.
Given this context I think it’s remarkable Gareth Ainsworth has us in play-off contention. I’m going to try and enjoy the rest of this season as much as I can.
Do you really think that a player can make over 200 EFL appearances for six different clubs, many of those games at Championship level, even though ‘all he has is fitness/effort’ ? That is a complete misunderstanding of what it takes to be a professional footballer.
I don’t think McCarthy is the same player he was a couple of seasons ago. Our first season back in league one he was a class apart and fully deserved his move to Millwall at the end of that season. Then during the league one promotion season when he signed on loan for us you could tell he was a quality player.
He has looked a shadow of that player in the last 18 months or so. Whenever he receives the ball he looks really off balance and uncomfortable. Hopefully he can rediscover his old form as he certainly has the ability.
I was very disappointed that Jason McCarthy was totally cold-shouldered during his season at Millwall in favour of Mahlon Romeo (now at Cardiff). He only played a couple of games (according to the ever dependable Wikipedia) and his delight at returning to his spiritual home was unbridled. He’s a great guy and always gives 100% but Jack Grimmer seems to me, certainly over the last few months, to have a clear edge. He’s been outstanding from back to front.
Personally, I think he has that little extra fire in his belly when he wears the armband. You can tell how proud he is to lead out this team. Genuinely, I think his game goes up a level when he’s captain.
When we had McCarthy in his first stint, I distinctly remember fans suggesting we were lucky to have him. He was one of our better players. Shows how far we have come.
What actually happened to Mccarthy? He was superb on loan first time round, being compared to Mawson.. I remember him playing in a defensive midfield role one game and controlling the game. In all honesty he's been terrible since coming back, donkey like! He can't pass, he can't control the ball, he can't cross the ball, he gets caught out of possession every time he plays and he commits fouls in the box that thankfully are missed most of the time. He's not league 1 level, but a few years ago he was championship level. Bizarre
The beauty is that we all see the game differently, all opinions are valid re the players in front of us. Personal slights on observations are, at best, unfortunate.
My only criticism of McCarthy is that he is so one footed that it is relatively easier to stop him attacking by forcing him into a position where it is more logical to use his left foot to pass forward, at which point he tends to laboriously turn around and look for a right footed pass backwards. As such, he seems to thrive more by outrunning the defenders or being able to stay on his right to get a cross in. Aside from that, he really puts teams on their heels, and I feel has a good understanding with the other Mac. Defensively Grimmer is better, but McCarthy is still a great player to have in the squad.

Grimmer has been great, it's McCarthy that worries me

Wing, too.

I’m sure McCarthy used to be able to cross. I seem to recall some great link up play with GMac.
Our game isn’t really hit the goal line and get a cross in, despite having Vokes. I always envisaged Horgan playing that role.
McCarthy was almost unplayable for opponents at times towards the end of the Champo season.
Watched a large amount though presumably?
Since the beginning of Nov, only 3 (I'll be there tomorrow!)

Unreal post this.
Especially the latter line.

He has PLAYED for a Championship club in Wycombe.

He's not hit the heights of his first spell, but to say he's been a "donkey" and "terrible" is just baffling.

I agree, Mccarthy is never goal side of an attacker. Defensively he is a shocking

Give it a fucking rest eh?
But personal slights about a professional footballer who also happens to represent the club we support are acceptable?
