It always makes me wonder why it’s our expectation that all footballers have to like football to be good at it, or at least be worthy of being called a good player.
Having had the opportunity to turn a very enjoyable hobby/pastime of mine into a full time job, the interest in continuing doing my “jobby” (half hobby, half job) outside of work hours became precisely zero. I can certainly see footballers, who have played football all day everyday from the age of 4, through there youth, teens and into adulthood having absolutely no interest in anything football related outside of training and match day, yet still be professional enough to do their job.
To us, it’s a dream, a fantasy, to be a professional footballer. But to them, it really is a job.
