  • I’m definitely in the third category.

I suspect you were at the Marcus Bean goal (of t-shirt fame) game. Perhaps you hadn’t moved to Wycombe by ‘74 for the Middlesbrough fa cup game?

Just a bit of Sunday morning fun.

  • I was at the Middlesbrough game with my girlfriend who’s now my wife !!

  • I wasn't allowed to go to the Middlesbrough game as I had to accompany my younger sister to my Dad's work's Christmas pantomime outing. I still haven't forgiven her!

  • Only Middlesbrough at home as my dad wouldn't go to the away game midweek given he had to be up at 6 the following morning and Beano

  • Neither of the above but I was there for Carlos Lopez

I was at the Middlesbough home game with my dad and then with my daughter when Beano scored. But I have missed loads of other important stuff.

  • I was there for Yves Ma-Kalambay at Oxford...

  • We moved to Penmoor Close in Sands in 1974 (I know!) from Basingstoke. I think it was that year when we had that extraordinary sequence of Cup matches against Bedford which went to at least two replays. The Sun - a broadsheet and very different newspaper in those days - published an amusing account of the saga relating it at each stage to events going on in the ‘outside’ world.

As I mentioned on the BWK thread, I was there in the cattle shed for the Middlesbrough game. 12,000 (officially) squashed into Loakes Park. Unforgettable.

Not only did I witness Marcus Bean’s sensational goalscoring feat against Carlisle and his celebratory sprint along the touchline below us in the Frank Adams stand, I made one of my very rare purchases from the club shop when the commemorative T-shirt was reduced to a fiver ! I wore it to that Open Day in July 2022 (or was it last year?) for people who waived the season ticket refund for the Championship season.

  • It was 1966 we had the FA Cup encounters with Bedford

  • I watched all those games home and away another great time to be a wanderer

  • Watched both, the Beano goal was fantastic plus I bought the t-shirt which I wore a a top for my PJs. The Boro match I watched from a ward at Wycombe General having nutted the rear end of a brick delivery lorry on my motorbike. 🙄

So did I and I thought it was at the first replay at Bedford that I first met Margaret and Tony Stallwood but that would make them nearly 80 now and they’re definitely not that age. Also, I didn’t realise I was watching Wycombe as long ago as 1966.

We were living in Denham Garden Village at the time and I was commuting to London to a new job in Savile Row. No, not tailoring. Dogsbody in the Civil Service looking for and cutting out relevant press reports. That was when I came across the report in the Sun on the Bedford saga which I commented on earlier this afternoon.

West End Central police station was just across the road and I lined up there on a few occasions in identity parades. Never picked. But the most memorable experience was hearing the Beatles playing and recording Get Back on the roof of the Apple building during the lunch break..

  • "But the most memorable experience was hearing the Beatles playing and recording Get Back on the roof of the Apple building during the lunch break.."

This might be the biggest flex in the history of the Gasroom.

  • That Beatles rooftop gig pretty much trumps everything. Wow.

But back to football I was in the stand for the Boro home game and travelled up by coach for the replay with the players wives, families and assorted club officials who didn’t fly up. I remember chatting to Gary Hands younger brother (who was similar age to me - 14).

I was also at all three of the Bedford FA Cup games in the mid 70s and I think I probably was taken to the first of the Bedford games in 1966 (my dad tended to take us to the bigger games and my first game was at the start of that year).

I wasn’t there when Beano scored though.

  • You are correct, sorry @micra. You obviously meant the match-up in 1975 which had 2 replays rather than the 1966 epic with 3 replays.

Somehow the 1966 saga sticks in my mind more - from tales told rather than eye witness. Whereas by 1975 girls had become a distraction on Saturday afternoons, so I'd forgotten about that!

  • I was there when Paul Hyde played upfront against Marlow in the B&B Cup

  • I saw Magno Viera score his only two Wycombe goals (I think) in a 4-0 drubbing of Macclesfield.

    Does that count?

  • I was there in 1976 when Wycombe beat Monza 2-0 in the Anglo-Italian cup 2-1 on aggregate after we lost 1-0 away.

  • I was there at the Marcus Bean match. I was also at the game where Niall Thompson scored the only goal of the game to beat Exeter City in the LDV Vans Trophy.

  • I saw Steve Claridge get his only brace for us in the driving snow.

  • Did anyone see the Stuart Roberts hattrick at Northampton?

  • Grimsby away, FA Cup third round replay. Only about 200 of us made that trip so the number of people who can claim (as I can) to have attended every match of "that" cup run is very small indeed

    Absolute superfan

  • @eric_plant Went to Grimsby but missed Harrow Borough.

  • Ah, but can you claim to have seen Wycombe play Dunstable Town?

    October 24th 1970 FA Cup 3rd Qualifying round, Dunstable 0 v 4 Wycombe.

In their program notes that day was a comment to the effect that "a coach will be leaving the ground if there is demand (for their next away game)...".

At the time this was viewed as quite amusing since Wycombe, in those days, would always take several coach loads to away games. How things stick in the mind - after all this time I've never forgotten reading that.

  • Who else was at Vicarage Road in 1959 for FA Cup. It was my first ever game as my Uncle was a Watford fan.

  • Tranmere away 30th September 2003. Lawrie Sanchez last game. Lost 2-1 in front of 58 away fans.

That our lowest away following in the football league?

    Or should that be infamous
