Went leahy for a solid performance and another free kick goal..... obviously didnt score the penalty but..... kinda wish on reflection I'd given it to mustard though.... a goal to mark his return from a horribly long injury.

  • Skura. He seemed the most composed defender when surrounded by very senior pros. A couple of goal saving challenges too.

Yeah I went Skura as well, he was a pretty easy MoM for me.

  • Skura looks so very composed. Good to see Grimmer looking sharp

  • Skura for me. Calm, composed and strong.

I was torn between Hanlan and Skura but decided on balance that going for the former was based on heart over head, even though he showed flashes of pace and strength and some very nifty footwork in tight situations. But, too often, he was unable to retain the ball in those tight situations. Took his goal brilliantly though against a superb young goalkeeper.

However, Declan Skura is so obviously a rapidly rising star with his composure, reading of the game and skill on the ball that it seems important to get the message across to him that we fans think he’s rather special.

There’s been much comment lately about Jason McCarthy having slipped down the pecking order. The way Skura slotted so effortlessly into the right back role when Grimmer got injured recently is another reason why McCarthy has such a mountain to climb.

I think it has become a prerequisite for any Wycombe player nowadays to have clear Championship potential. Although Jason McCarthy spent a season at Millwall in the Championship he was up against Romero (?) for the right back position and had very limited opportunities. Against that, of course, he and Fred became an impressive pair of wingbacks towards the end of our own season in the Championship.

  • Apologies for such a load of late night waffle.

    Just can’t help myself.

  • Butcher. Quietly goes about his business, rarely loses a challenge on the ground or in the air. Always available to receive a pass and made a few excellent ones of his own. His tireless work freed up Humphreys and Leahy all last night.

  • I feel for Hartridge. He is out of the first team line up, Skura is rightly ahead of him in the pecking order, Taffazoli is also going to be ahead of him and he is not getting much of a chance to shine and turn things around. He was not outstanding last night and must be feeling quite frustrated as a senior pro.

  • Interesting opinions.

I didn’t think Skura had his best game last night. Skura was slow to react to the goal and in comparison to earlier appearances looked a little shaky in my view although did have a couple of good moments including an interception to prevent a one on one in second half. Clearly he wasn’t helped by playing with both a new keeper and central defence partner.

I went for Hanlan because of his goal and nuisance potential. Butcher would have been my second choice. A reminder of our options should Scowen’s injury be serious.

  • I voted for Butcher. What a consummate professional that bloke is. Must be disappointed to be out of the side, and rightly so because he is a very good player, and yet when called upon he's ready to go out and put in a performance. Exactly the sort of player every club needs, and talk of sending him out on loan is utterly absurd.

Shout out to Brandon as well. Very encouraging signs that he has lost none of his pace

  • Interesting praise for Butcher. I thought he was poor really. Average in every area and can see why he’s nowhere near the starting side. Really poor on the half turn. Very one footed. Languid in possession. Doesn’t cover enough ground out of possession. Poor aerially. Really hope he gets back to the sort of form he was displaying in patches last season.

  • You were watching a different game to the one I saw!

  • Have to agree with my old sparring partner Eric on this. Butcher isn’t one of those showy players who stands out for moments of individual brilliance but he does the basics very well and is consistent. A key member of the squad.

  • Thought Butcher had a really solid game doing the unglamorous things really well. Also though Taff was understandably off the pace and felt his positioning for the playing out from the back needs some work which along with Crawley’s good press contributed to Shamal’s couple of poor play outs.

Kind words. Interestingly, I saw someone on the Exeter forum note that he was not a starter here and someone replied along the lines of "well we know he can only play in a back three, so maybe they are playing four at the back."
