I only started seriously following WWFC in February 2023, at the game with Bolton which we won 1-0 with a great goal from Lewis Wing, deep into first half injury time. People had said to expect lots of balls pumped high and long, which I would be familiar with as a former W***s supporter, and i wasn't disappointed. In the second half, Wycombe's dogged defence kept Bolton at bay, and in the end it was they who were resorting to long ball tactics.
This result was the 5th of 5 consecutive league wins, taking us to the brink of the playoffs, but also turned out to be Ainsworth's last game in charge, before he departed for Loftus Road.
Under Bloomfield, the tactics seemed to change, but with no clear plan that I could see. A mixed set of results saw us finish 9th in the table, and I optimistically opted for a season ticket for the 23/24 season.
That season got off to a terrible start, and got even worse during November / December. MB seemed unsure of his best team, or what formation to play, and for a long time we scrabbled around in the lower reaches of the table. But things started looking up in January, and our passing through the thirds began to pay dividends, with us finishing 10th, including the 5-2 thrashing of Peterborough, and a Wembley appearance in the EFL Trophy final.
This season, thanks to some excellent squad retention and recruitment, we have a settled style of play which is not only pleasing on the eye, but which also gets results, hence our current position in the table. More importantly, we have a real depth to the squad, such that our '2nd XI' could replace all of the first choice starters, without too much drop-off in quality. Exciting times ahead.
I honestly can’t remember many times in my entire time watching WWFC that I’ve seen any manager or player as gutted as MB looked as the “Bloomfield Out” chants broke out at Orient away.
That Fleetwood first half was truly a huge low, especially given what had preceded it (Orient away being a prime example). Their best player getting idiotically sent off must surely have saved Blooms
Orient was so conflicting because, yes, it was a point from home, every player on the pitch was trying hard, and the atmosphere was loud, but the team performance was so incredibly awful.
I'm glad its all behind us, I'm glad I was wrong about MB, and I'm glad Couhig kept the faith.
