National Anthem
Seems like a lot of people getting excited that Carsley is not going to sing the National Anthem. I'm in the mneh camp on this one. Is it a big deal? He has Irish heritage, he played for Ireland, I can't see the problem.
It's not like 'I'm not English I'm Scouse' which for some reason does grind my gears.

You have thought all the free speech champions would be supporting his right not to sing the anthem. Apparently not.
He was never going to get the job fulltime anyway, so it's not really a long term 'problem'.
The Scotch and the Taffs have got anthem singing sown up, the English have 'almost winning things' as their speciality. Let's keep it that way.
Culture wars come to the gasroom.
The big problem with culture wars in my opinion is that everyone is expected to have an opinion.
The problem is who is telling you what opinion to have.
There’s always some reason for certain people to themselves upset over trivial matters if it suits an agenda. This is the most recent thing.
I’ve never sung the national anthem. It’s because I have a fuck awful singing voice and feel self conscious singing in an empty room, let alone on tv infront of millions. It’s not because some farrage sycophant thinks I’m unpatriotic
Beware the casual ‘so what do you think about ….?’ trap. This is usually a set up for someone lecturing you about a topic they became informed about yesterday from Facebook.
If you read the story he just says he never sings the anthem pre match. Whatever country he was or is representing. Not really controversial, although the knuckle draggers will moan.
I'm fully expecting to hear complaints that we've got an 'Irishman' (more offensive terminology available) in charge. This will no doubt be used as further evidence of his lack of patriotic spirit, while in the breath calling for Pep to be appointed. With zero irony.
In any case, the English national anthem is absolutely diabolical. I absolutely hate it. Would much prefer Jerusalem.
Having said that, I do tend to belt out God Save the King at England tournament games. Obviously that's a contradiction but there you go.
I think he'll be appointed permanently if we play well @Kim_il_Swan
A complete non-story. It's a terrible anthem anyway.
Describing the Scottish as Scotch is a much greater crime than not singing the national anthem (there, I’m not even giving it capital letters). The majority of football folk only move their lips barely perceptibly in any case.
How come he was allowed to coach the U21s for so long? I don’t actually know how long but I bet it was for more than one match.
Especially when, like myself, you're from Glasgow.
I think the UK should pass a UN resolution that all nations must have a National Anthem written by their own citizens in the past century. That way, we get to take our pick from Beatles' numbers, while Russia are stuck with this:
Hockey is No Coward's Game (Трус не играет в хоккей) (youtube.com)
I may be misquoting George Bernard Shaw and have no idea the context he would have said it but:
'Never wrestle with pigs. You both get dirty...and the pig likes it.'
I'm not a fan of international football any more, but they could really spice it up by allowing players to be available for selection every time for any country they are eligible. For instance, if Grealish is dropped from the England squad, Ireland can also select him. That would make it much more fun!
I can never remember the words.
Yes. It's tempting but futile to try to educate these people on whatever the topic they're enquiring about is. The only reason anyone is angry about this bullshit is because far right hate mongers and Russian disinformation campaigns want to distract people. We all saw that first hand after Southport. There's not a single culture war topic that isn't just a smoke screen to distract you from the fact that your energy bills are through the roof, water companies are pouring shit into the rivers while paying out record profits to shareholders, it's over seven years since Grenfell and not one tory has gone to prison, we promised the finance world that we would bail them out again next time 2008 inevitably happens and so both the tories and labour have stuck to a policy of austerity to make the people most in need pat for it all, and you'll never be able to retire. But look over there, that person is trans!
England get an attack-minded coach, suddenly become "a joy to watch" with the many of the same players who looked turgid at the Euros. Who knew?
Just listened to the first half on the radio. Carsley is the new messiah and every player is brilliant.
One gripe. When did socks become such a problem for elite footballers?
More of a Liverpool FC thing. See quite a lot of Everton flags at England games.
Normal service resumed second half
Second half was terrible.
Give them time, they have to re-learn how to play well for an entire 90 minutes again.
Plus there's possibly also the fact Carsley didn't want to completely humiliate Ireland so once the result was already settled he went easy on them.
I don’t think Carsley really wants the England job. And who can blame him?
