The moments before the moments - Wycombe 4-3 Carlisle
I love the club putting up old full match replays in the archives, as you get to see all the 'what-if' moments right before major incidents. Watching the end of the Carlisle Beany game back, there are a few fun things which stood out.
- Carlisle still 3-2 up in injury time, and their 9 saunters down the wing towards the corner flag, looking to kill time. However, one of their players darts into the box and (in fairness to them, a man up) the 9 can't resist playing him in to try and kill the game off. Bloomfield has tracked back and forces a corner...except the referee gives a goal kick. From Bloomfield's reaction, it definitely looks as though it should have been a corner! The resulting goal kick precipitates the sequence which leads to the equalizer.
- Great refereeing of Bayo #1 - from that goal kick, Bayo ends up with two Carlisle players around him, and keeps battling until he incredibly wins the ball, with a Carlisle player tripping over as Bayo wins it from him. 9 times out of 10 that season, the referee gives a foul on Bayo, but he had his wits about him and let the play develop, which directly leads to the equalizer seconds later.
- Carlisle realize that they need to push for a winner with the man advantage, and have a throw down by our corner. However, a short throw leads to a mis-control directly out for a Wycombe throw, which we use to start gradually pushing up the left side of the pitch.
- Great refereeing of Bayo #2 - from that sequence, Bayo ends up trying to dribble past his man but his arm is held, leading to him falling over. Again, many times that season he would not have been given the foul, but the referee understands that Bayo can actually be fouled too, and gives the free kick.
- Blooms swings in the freekick, and the rest is history.
Obviously there are always numerous 'what-ifs' throughout a football match, but there is something enjoyable about watching it back, knowing everything is going to break your way!
Similarly, the sequence in the playoff final where we appeal for a penalty (which looks like a strong shout) only for Oxford to kick it down the left and Grimmer hospital-passes it back to Allsop...only the Oxford player is too busy whining to pounce, so it goes down the other end for the Fred penalty. That is obviously a very famous sequence, but so hilarious to watch back!
