Interesting instrumentation. I’m completely new to Courtney Barnett so not sure how much of the backing is electronic. The lyrics and the way she phrases them is unusual too. Sufficiently so to entice me into a bit of googling.
I’ve always enjoyed female vocalists - none more so than Joan Armatrading (or Armsaflailing/Armourplating as I tend to refer to her). Couldn’t shoe horn any of that into the name of any football club.
Here’s another all-time favourite. Mary Coughlan. First came across her at the Town Hall about 15-20 years ago. Plaintive at times and bittersweet (which I like), reflecting a background of abusive partners and alcoholism from which I believe she has long since escaped and recovered.
Aldous and Nadia aren't deadpan and you can't really hear their Kiwi-ness, but if you're not familiar with Aldous Harding, it takes a bit of time to get used to her vocal mannerisms, especially if you see her live.

Re Courtney Barnett, I quite like her songs, but not such a fan of her voice.
As for other female singers, I do like Julia Holter, Weyes Blood, Aldous Harding, Nadia Reid.
