  • And the football authorities will do Jack sh1t about it. This is not an overnight thing

  • Does this mean the Derby players will soon be giving tearful press conferences before they decamp to Mansfield, Burton, Eastwood Town, etc etc?

La Liga are coming down firmly on them - because they actually have a salary cap - but obviously they'll still be in the Champions League, even though I fail to see how they can't have breached FFP and then some (not that kind of thing seems to matter...). But it really is How Not to Run a Football Club 101.

  • The Man City desk thumping along the lines of ‘prove it’ sounds worrying too. It smacks of ‘yeah we have, but we found a caveat that means you can’t do nothing about it’. The rules are either not fit for purpose or the people behind them are not fit to enforce them.

  • Messi leaving and Barca not being able to just pick the next device in the list to get around ffp and their attempts to live way beyond their means should be applauded really. They've made a shambles out of a dominant position over the last decade, bought badly and resorted to swap deals to fiddle amortization on very Derby lines.
The fact he actually left because he got a massive offer from a club that also seem to be beyond the rules is less impressive. City somehow still having the bandwith to try and sign England's two best players raises questions too.
Theres two different things though tbh, there's one thing big spenders being able to spend what they like (despite its inflationary pressures) and another thing clubs running up debts they can't realistically pay back and trying to avoid them in the dodgiest of manners.
FfP will always be difficult to impose as it restricts the ability of outsiders to invest their own money into a football system desperate for money, and as it will often be up against very wealthy individuals with good lawyers
Clubs need to be held to account more for their short term and long term spending, accounting methods and plans for the future although this is very tricky too and subject to the law.
I'm sure Peter Risdale will have it sorted out before too long
