Jason McCarthy Re-Signs

  • I am assuming @DevC 's baffled stance is his standard devils advocate position rather than any real confusion on what a great signing McCarthy is.

dammit @Right_in_the_Middle caught in the Dev trap again!

  • DevC's advocate.

  • For anyone (obviously just Dev) baffled by this signing, here's a handy explainer. Different players in the same position can have different strengths and weaknesses, and different opponents can have different vulnerabilities to exploit. One week Grimmer might be the best RB to pick, we might be up against a team with a tricksy left winger who likes to cut inside and Grimmer is incredible at dealing with those, as evidenced in the play off final. The next week, we might be up against a team playing 5 at the back with a slightly slow left-back, in which case McCarthy bombing forward and whipping in crosses at every opportunity is going to be more effective. Most of this should be self-evident to anyone who has watched more than one game of football.

  • I'm baffled people are baffled by Dev's subtle form of trolling.

But i am surprised people keep on about McCarthy in midfield, especially centre midfield. Has he ever played there?

    Just my opinion.

No doubt McCarthy is a very good player as is Grimmer. I'd be happy with either. If say Grimmer got injured in wk 1 it would look an inspired signing. As it would if either has a blinder season and is sold for a seven figure sum at the end of the year.

While I understand McCarthy can play CB and possibly midfield, I am not sure he has proven that he is anywhere near as effective there as he is at RB.

It just feels a little bit odd that we have two high quality RBs on three year contracts. I think I would have preferred to spend the money on a specialist CB and a competent back up RB. Each to their own though. Maybe I just need to get used to strength in depth in a higher league.

  • What @drcongo said.

As the weeks go on I look forward to 'I'm baffled. Is signing a 20 goal a season Championship striker really what the team needs at this point in time...?'

  • Welcome back Macca. What great news to wake up to! It must be bliss to be in the second tier with s club who loves him back!

  • @DevC you should try the magical portal that is youtube which has an interview with Jason in which he discusses versatility across the back. You might be de-baffled.

  • Or just see him in the flesh

  • Gosh this forum can be an aggressive place @Wendoverman

As I have said above, there is no doubt that McCarthy is a very good player, arguably one of our best. I think most would agree that Grimmer is too.

Would you mind if I asked you a couple of questions

I understand McCarthy can fill in at CB and apparently LB too. From what you have seen of him in the past and given that Charles for example will presumably have to miss a number of games due to condensed fixture list , would you see him as a regular alternative at championship level at either CB or LB or really just an emergency back up for those with more regular back ups for those positions still to be recruited?

Do you think you would be as positive about this transfer if McCarthy had had the career he had but the Wycombe spells being instead for say Shrewsbury? I guess what I am asking is if you didnt know him well, would you be a little surprised then at signing a second (predominently) RB on a long contract on presumably first team wages when we already have the excellent Grimmer?

Anyway I guess as always all of us should learn to trust GA -he gets these things right far more right than wrong. I hope JM goes on to have an excellent season, winning player of the season in our run to the playoffs.

  • Forum in happy about good player signing shock!
@DevC As I understand football in the modern era is a squad game and within that squad it is preferable to have a number of good players...having seen Jason play as a RB and a CB and the management having secured him with the intent of him playing football for the club I really have no idea what the **** you are banging on about.

  • Ok you don't have to answer. Lets hope he has a great season.

  • "Answer my questions" alert

  • Like a Medussa you've been drawn in again @Wendoverman .

I'm really excited by the McCarthy signing.

  • I think a good case in point here is a similar situation when we brought in Jason McCarthy at the beginning of the 2018-19 season. He was a clear upgrade on Michael Harriman, but Harriman still had so much quality that I remember thinking it is a shame that someone would miss out. However, Harriman still made 24 appearances to the 44 of McCarthy. With the need for more squad rotation, and Jason's ability to cover across the back, it would not surprise me to see McCarthy play at least 30-35 games (bar injury) even if he is never considered a starter.

In the interests of accuracy, Medussas don't get drawn in, nor do they draw in. That's Sirens.

  • I would also like to point out what hair I have is not in the least bit snakey and though I can give a good cold hard stare... no-one dies...

  • Medusa would turn you to stone for spelling her name incorrectly!

I wonder which mythical being RITM actually meant to mention.

As per the Doc, Medussas don't do any drawing in, out, or about.
Sirens draw people in, but you wouldn't say "Like a Siren, you've been drawn in", as they aren't drawn in themselves.

So which being is drawn in?

  • Iron filings?

Always had you down as more Paddington Bear than Medusa.

    It's the hat...

  • Not the 'cuddly' physique?

  • I think was thinking Sirens but to be honest its probably more the smell of coffee or freshly baked bread.

Not that manufactured smell Subway use though

  • So many reasons whyMcCarthy is a great signing:
    1) He has proved he can handle Championship football.
    2) He adds the vital element of competition so that all our defensive players know there is a quality player waiting to take their place if their standards drop.
    3) He can play in a variety of positions.
    4) We released a RB when Sido Jombati left so we’ve now replaced him.
    5) He says the best football he’s played in his career is at WW.
    6) He’s a great lad, very popular in the dressing room and completely Wycombe-ised.
And perhaps most important of all:
    7) He desperately wanted to join us and we could afford him.

You'll be doing a list of why us getting promoted is good next :)

99% of us know! One poster was "baffled".

  • It was intended for the baffled one!

  • A detailed rebuttal of your list being typed as we post I assume!
