Sad News regarding Dave Watson
The former Sunderland,Man City and England captain struck down with an incurable brain disease.
As an impressionable youngster in the 70's, along with Kevin Keegan, Big Dave was my first football hero. I was just amazed out how good and dominant Dave was in the air. To this day, I have never seen any player who was a better header of the ball. I cant believe the stat,'s that Watson was only 6ft !!, he appeared to be a man mountain back then. A lot of opposition forwards appeared to only half heartedly jump when challenging Dave, such was his dominance. Like most kids, I wanted to play centre forward and emulate Keegan,Frank Worthington,Joe Jordan and Terry Glynn. But after watching the aerial dominance of Big Dave, and Anton Vircavs at Loakes Park, central defending became a lot more appealing.
Good luck Big Dave, a true Warrior of the game.

Warrior is the word. Dave Watson is one of the greats for England, Sunderland, Man City, Derby County and Notts County. I have met him a few times and he is a lovely man. I think his wife Penny was always concerned that heading the football had caused him head injury and said as much in a book a few years ago.
I do think we need to consider banning heading in youth football.
