Come on, this is ludicrous. He started every match he was fit for this season. Charles was signed on a short term contract, probably to cover for his injury. I'd buy that his injury was worse than originally expected, except he was on the bench on Sat and fully taking part in the warm ups. There is no way he would have continued as captain over the summer and the start of the season if he wasn't in Gareth's long-term plans. So something has changed off the pitch. I'm afraid until the club clarifies what on earth has happened then people will speculate. I for one will not buy the spin that our captain stormed out of the club because he feared dropping behind Stewart and Charles, it's total poppycock.
He was the only defender we had who really marshalled people well, none of the others are vocal or assertive enough.
Sometimes he did slightly daft things like grabbing defenders or letting the ball bounce over his head in dangerous areas but was ok the whole excellent for us.
Something fairly substantial has clearly happened. Like @aloysius says you can't imagine charles signing a half season contract was the deal breaker.
So has to be personal or some fall out. If it was the latter Gareth while obvs would still be diplomatic surely wouldn't give as much talk about being sorry to see him go.
“Explore opportunities elsewhere” could mean the chance to be player coach, player manger or anything else at this stage of his career as much as a supposed or speculated fall out with GA.
Clearly caught everyone by surprise but it’s a step in the right direction for me. His performance at Oxford was enough evidence that it was time for him to move on. Don’t see any need to subscribe to any conspiracy theories.
So could simply be a sensible conversation that he won't be a first choice guaranteed this season, plus an offer in the background.
Just feels very abrupt, when Stewart tends to miss 3 months a season injured, Charles clearly has had major issues, and Sido has had a few of these lay offs now.
However, if those three stay fit, we're well covered, with Phillips and the new loanee as cover.

Loving the blind optimism of those three being fit enough to form a pairing all season. That's the spirit

Well quite, hence why it is a massive "if" in my post, following a line about the threesome's massive injury catalogue previously!
I demand to know the answer and the fact neither the club or player have gone on twitter to explain to my satisfaction means I will be forced to make things up about it. If I find out Adam was forced out over skimming off the top of the crisp contract...
Woah! Didn't see that coming! Damn you, working for a living, damn you.
Conspiracy theories aside (and I wonder why we'd release him if it's to go to another club - would we not want a fee of some kind?), I can see a very positive spin on this, with his not being first choice now, perhaps, and us being willing to let him do exactly as the tweet said and pursue other opportunities while he can.
He was immense for us as a character and I hope things go well for him.
It's a very sudden parting of the ways, though if it's a contract termination by mutual consent with little to no pay-off, it might have helped Gareth shuffle the deck and freshen the squad up.
Certainly it wasn't like Paul Hayes after that first-half against Notts County where it was clear his time at the club had come to an end, though El Abd's lack of pace was compensated for by his calmness under pressure and an ability to marshal the backline.

Yes, but why would he be exploring that a month into a new season?
With the new season in progress and so the managerial merry go round gets going, new non playing opportunities are more likely to arise now than during the off season?
For example, someone’s suggested his destination could be Bolton. In a playing position seems a bit of a sideways move, but with that club being rescued then there is also a whole host of options that could arise for a player coming to the end of his playing days and looking for a longer term employment.
Adam was an inspired signing by Gareth, He leads by example and gets other players playing. I would have liked to see Dean Morgan go into one of his strops with El Abd as skipper !!
He will always be remembered fondly by me, his legs were certainly not getting any quicker, but his reading of the game and marshalling of the back four made me confident of when he was in the team than out of it.
Whatever the reason for his sudden departure, Adam El Abd has been an absolute credit to himself, and his profession. I would not be suprised to see him enter the coaching and managerial realms in the future.
Thank you Adam.

This is worrying, Chas. I find myself agreeing with every word you’ve written once again!
I'm sure we could put a stop to that if we move the subject onto politics.
That's is anyone can make any sense of what the hell is going on in the political world at present.
Maybe a game between the leave and remain politicians to determine the outcome.

Seems to be heading to Bolton according to a number of their fans on Twitter.
A sad end to an amazing transfer window.

I agree with @aloysius that there must be something more to this.
Perhaps an offer from another club (see above post re Bolton) that he felt he had to take.
Perhaps he was stripped of the captaincy? I doubt we will ever know, unless he writes his autobiography.
Hopefully it was mutual, with a great opportunity on the table.

Because today is the last day he can leave Wycombe and sign for another club before January.
Makes a bit more sense @Chris.

My theory: Dom Gape was promised the captaincy if he signed a new contract.
I'm probably only arriving around kick off/don't notice, but has Gape been captain in the games this season? Even when El Abd was playing?

My favourite Wycombe players are ones that give everything for the cause every game that they played regardless of the result Adam was one of those .
It's always good to see players who seemingly struggle and get the crowd a bit on their back early on, turn it round

It's been Bloomers, then Gape when Bloomers goes off (I think) in the games without Adam.
JJ
That makes sense. So maybe it will be JJ instead of Gape permanently too. I don't see Bloomers playing enough...
