  • @WidmerWanderer I thought you had enjoyed the beer tokens too much and were mistakenly saying Paris and it came out Parrish.....

    Sorry I've been drinking. ( I know he went to.....I can't say it...Co!~#%^ )

  • @PBo : Brentford (whatever the composition of their lineup yesterday) are an established Championship club and they seemed to think that it was going to be a walk in the park. It wasn’t. Wycombe were extremely competitive in the first half and fully deserved to be 2-0 up at half time. Several newcomers impressed - especially Paul Smyth and Josh Parker - but Brentford were fired up at the start of the second half and were level within a quarter of an hour. They have pace to burn.
It was good to meet several old friends and to make new acquaintances. The weather was just right, the pitch and surrounding broccoli-like woodland a picture and the 500 Club get-together rounded off a thoroughly relaxing and enjoyable afternoon.

@PBo agreed. Not only that but it gave Gareth a chance to have a look at who he might like to poach on loan from Brentford’s fringe players. Good choice of friendly opposition in my opinion.

  • "friendly opposition" can be taken several ways Dr, there was almost fisticuffs between Skotty K and a couple of theirs

  • It was far more physical than many a Friendly I’ve seen- so much so that I feared there might be an injury or two amongst a squad that can ill-afford any.
Scotty Kashket seems to have toughened up quite a lot!

He loves a scrap and a moan, should be a real pest this season, hope he gets in the box so he can bring the magic.

Not sure he will get in the side, much as I love the ‘pocket Messi’, Smyth looks a better version of the same.

  • Was it just me or did the ball seem to hold up a bit in the lush, dry grass? Personally I like games where there’s a bit of a zip on the top surface.

  • The amount of water they sprayed on before kickoff I'm not surprised there was some slowing. Their no. 7 could't get to grips with it either!

  • There seems to be a slight contradiction in terms there. I thought the watering was intended to slick it up/give the pitch a bit of a zip rather than slow it down but I do recall on a couple of occasions thinking “oh, dear that’s going in to touch” when in fact the player targeted was able to keep the ball in play. Not sure how localised Friday night’s torrential downpour was - we had nearly an inch of rain in Widmer End - but I was surprised to see the sprinklers on before kickoff.

Hats off to the groundsmen once again though. A quick trim and it’d be fine for giant bowls.

Everyone else was thinking it was going out of touch

  • You’re not Alan Hutchinson’s grandson by any chance?

  • Thinking logically, there's a touchline, so beyond that is "touch".

So going "into" touch seems more sensible.
Out of touch would suggest the ball is mostly "in touch" which no-one ever says.

  • Balls would be in touch if they spent more time socialising in Marlow bistros

  • Popular folk etymology has it that bistro derives from the Russian for “hurry up/quickly” used by occupying Russian troops around the time of the Napoleonic Wars when waiting impatiently to be served coffee in Parisian cafés and small restaurants. Ask Jacob.

  • Thanks @Malone. As always, the voice of reason. But in future I’m going to use the more up-to-date “the ball’s gone out of play for a throw” (thanks @TheChair !)

  • is 'That was out!' not good enough for you people?

  • Wow, how did you make a thread out of that!

  • @Wendoverman Have you come over all 'Dickie Bird'?

Obviously I do during games as the question of 'out of touch' and into touch rarely raises it's head. I am not from Yorkshire though.

    "throw in"

  • Correct @Malone !

  • For the benefit of @Blue_since_1990 (and anyone else who understandably wonders what this storm in a teacup is all about) it dates back to a spat with @eric_plant a couple of months ago during a discussion about a telephone information service which the club provided last century (mainly voiced by the venerable Alan Hutchinson) and the local radio commentaries by that worthy in the course of which he frequently told us that the ball had gone “out of touch”. I made a quip about this delightful idiosyncrasy but it was lost on @eric_plant who remains stubbornly convinced that Hutch was correct. I have clearly offended him as he now gives virtually everything I say the thumbs down. Just watch.

  • Thanks for the explanation @micra

  • He's also an exceptional grump in fairness @micra. A tendency of the aged, that you have avoided quite nicely.
Although you've picked up some outrageous levels of pedantaroonism.

  • I’ll need examples @Malone if I’m to consider taking steps to rectify them, whatever they are !

    Many thanks @drcongo.

  • Wow !

  • I’m going for the record!

  • The micraphobes are all safely tucked up in bed now so I’ll have to wait until I get up in the morning to check whether I have broken the record.

  • I wouldn't worry about it @micra I'm sure some people just do it for a laugh, I'll admit I have in the past if someone has moaned about a thumbs down (havnt to you this time though) , so I wouldn't take it personally. Do we really need a thumbs down or up option anyway ? What's the point.
