Perfidious, there are always exceptions although I accept not a huge number. Chris Waddle, Les Ferdinand, Chris Smalling and more locally, D J Campbell and Fitz Hall all started in non league.
The scouting system these days is much more sophisticated, elite players don't slip through the net anymore and the top flight is so competitive that 'late developers' have no chance
Both Austin and Gayle only 25 and not yet reached their prime but your calling them journey men.
Austin could be the most expensive journey man in history this summer.
