New EFL Rules

This is interesting for us...

English Football League clubs will have to name at least one "club-developed" player in their matchday squads from the start of the 2018-19 season.

A club-developed player is defined as one who has been registered to the club for at least a year before the end of his under-19 season.

  • In other words it would mean having to spend money on a youth development structure that is unnecessary for any other reason than to appease power mad Mr Harvey.

  • I looked at that article yesterday and wondered the very same thing. If we don't have a youth set up, how could we possibly comply? As long as the Premiere league clubs can hoard & steal young players, the viability of youth development for lower league clubs is surely becoming more & more diluted.

  • Not sure it would require a youth set-up as such but it would mean identifying and registering an 18 year old this summer and including them in next season's squad. Always a gamble.

  • What if the registeted 18 year old gets a serious injury and we have no other player registered for a matchday squad?

  • Unless there is a get out clause in the event of injuries or illness, and to cover for any good ones leaving for better opportunities next summer, we will need to have a whole bunch of youngsters signed up this summer if one has to be named in the squad for every league match the following season. It doesn't say they have to play, though, so presumably they could sit on the bench with their leg in a cast and arm in a sling as long as they are named as one of the 18-man squad.

I expect that many clubs will sign up a few on cheap retainers so that, if worst comes to worst, they can sit them on the bench for a match or two if necessary. They don't have to be any good at football to sit on the bench and jog up and down the touchline doing stretches. All seven named substitutes are never going to be used and having one or two sitting on the bench with no intention of ever bringing them on happens already.

  • didn't we have a young goalkeeper a couple of years back who worked behind the bar? Just sign another one, he could do the kit and clean the changing rooms just like apprentices used to

  • With all due respect to Baz, we probably should look at bringing in a younger sub keeper anyway.

  • Couldn't we just put one of the ball boys on the bench as they seem to prefer sitting down rather than recovering the ball?

  • I hope we have raised the fact that we do not have an Academy with the EFL. There should be a transition period built into any fundamental changes. Although this is football, so you never know
