Chesham edge Herts/Bucks derby at Kings Langley

In an exciting local derby at Gaywood Park, newly-promoted Kings Langley put up a good fight against local Bucks opposition Chesham United. With two first-half goals Chesham took a deserved half-time lead and although Kings Langley pulled a goal back near the end the hosts were unable to get an equaliser.

The ground at Kings Langley is pretty basic but the village side have achieved three promotions in three years and are just getting their ground up to the required minimum standard for Southern League Premier Division football. But with crowds often barely reaching 100 it's a tall order to find the money to keep up off the pitch. So it was a boost when a season's best attendance of 310 turned up in the hot sunshine to watch a pulsating game.

The pitch was flat but desperately in need of water with large expanses of brown dry grass. Consequently the ball often bounced higher than expected to the detriment of Kings Langley's attempts to play football on the floor. Chesham took the lead from a corner after 20 minutes when Adam Martin headed in from close range. Three minutes later Chesham doubled their lead as a long ball was missed by the home defence allowing Brad Watkins to lob the ball over the advancing keeper. Chesham were in control and the physical strength and experience of the visitors held the newcomers at bay.

After the break Kings Langley came back into the game but often the final ball into the box was lacking. However, with six minutes to go a cross from the right was brought down by Lewis Toomey who smashed a right-foot shot past visiting keeper Ashlee Jones from eight yards. Chesham were visibly shaken but managed to hold out for the final few minutes for a win they deserved over the 90 minutes.

A very friendly club to visit, £10 to get in and £1 for a basic programme. A good way to spend a spare afternoon on a lovely summer's day.
