How can you possibly tell if it’s out of character? We’ve only really heard one side of the story.
from what we know of him, Gaz seems to me to be an incredibly forthright character, will put his heart on his sleeve and give you honesty.
But also someone that wouldn’t put up with any BS, perhaps especially after what went on at QPR, if things he was promised (like a take over and increased budget) don’t materialise.
With that in mind, late on in the season or not, if he doesn’t feel people above him are honest or able to fore fill promises made to him, I can 100% see him walking out at the first opportunity.
It also gives any incoming manager to Shrewsbury the same luxury he now has at Gillingham - the opportunity to review the squad over the last few games of the season and a full preseason to shape a team ready to take on league 2.
I think the issue is that GA said things only earlier this month like:
"I'm never going to be a Salopian as I wasn't born there. But I feel as Salopian as possible. I get proud crazily with this team. We're going to go on one hell of a journey. Stick with us."
Shrewsbury fans could perhaps be forgiven for reading into that the idea that GA was happy and fully committed. I doubt they saw "one hell of a journey" and "stick with us" as three more weeks and then out the door. And it's also a little difficult to think GA only became dreadfully unhappy in the past three weeks, to where he wanted to give up his hard-earned honourary Salopian passport.
Maybe the journey he was excited to be going on at the start of the month, when he actually looked at the ticket (i.e the new contract offered a couple of weeks ago - coincidence the change in tune after that, eh?) wasn’t the 2 week Disney World dream land the board had been promising him, but a dirty weekend for one in a condemned Blackpool BnB.
You could perhaps forgive him for feeling cheated into accepting the role in the first place.
Wouldn't have surprised me if something has happened in the past few weeks for the downturn in results. Broken promises from the chairman or interference from DoF Mickey Moore?
It's sad from my point of view. Shrewsbury a likeable club who I wanted to so well under Gaz.
All manner of reasons why women stay with abusive men, from fear of what might happen if they do leave (financial and social upheaval, possibility of even worse violence - you don't have to watch or read the news too much to see appalling examples), to belief said man might change.
Just listened to Ainsworth’s first interview with Gillingham and although very complementary about Shrewsbury and its chairman , the idea of being at home every day was a major factor in taking the job with Gillingham .
Good post, and I think that's possible. I would still hold to my earlier point that GA's natural overexuberance perhaps hurts the optics more than someone more guarded in their comments (he didn't have to be that bold with his excitement if he was not fully committed), but there must always be context.
It's a little like a hopeless romantic who will tell a partner that he is head over heels, madly in love, and can hear wedding bells in their future, only to say it is not working out a few weeks later.
I don't know...from past gasroom debates there was always at least one poster that will take the "he's served his time, he's allowed to get on with his profession" position.
Slough to Gillingham can be done in 1hr50 on the train. Half hour from Finch to Slough. Not ideal but knock an hour off his commute and he can work on the train...
Reckons Gillingham fans "know" football, and that when playing there, he'd make sure they didn't kick towards the ferocious noise wall home fans in the 2nd half.
The man is a legend at these soundbites.
A good answer to matey boy interviewing who was talking about recruitment.
Let the fella at least have 1 view of the current lot first eh?!
It's funny how some are quick to judge GA and calling him out for jumping ship .
None of us know what has gone on behind the scenes.
Yes.... the tone of the chairman's open letter projects anger and disapproval at GA and portrays him as in the wrong .....
Well well well ... Do we not remember a very similarly worded response from our interim chairman about MB?
It's all very similar tbh . Two wycombe legends we all (mostly) have a lot of trust in character and humility and honour.... two chairmen calling a different story.
I think GA is a decent bloke... something has gone on .... something has rocked him.... same as MB.... something has gone on that we will probably never be privy to.
I don't think anyone is judging GA too harshly, and the two situations are actually very different, almost opposite (as far as relationship with establishment). MB was unwanted from the minute Dan Rice darkened our door, and Rice has never had a kind word to say about him. Whereas with GA it sounds like the club were desperate to keep him, but it just did not work for his life (commute, pay, letdown on takeover etc.)
I am not judging GA as far as motives, but as I have said a couple of times above, the optics certainly look worse when you are a personality that gives the sort of "all-for-one, one-for-all" soundbites he does. We all know enough about GA to know his heart is always more or less in the right place, but I certainly don't blame Shrewsbury fans for seeing him as less than sincere after their experience!
Very much hoping Luton stay up (never thought I would write that sentence) but I don't think they will, so it will be interesting to see where Blooms lands if Luton do not keep him in L1. I suspect he has shown enough for another crack at a L1 job, hopefully. But given the travel constraints, how far would he go? I wonder if the Reading or (gulp) Peterborough jobs might come up.
Weirdly, however annoying Posh are, their attack-minded DNA would probably make for a great match with Bloomfield.
So what was the job Ainsworth and Dobbo were hanging around for , before they took Shrewsbury but didn’t happen. Hearts? The Spanish side( cannot remember their name) ?
They have got a tough run in. 5 of their last 8 games are against teams in the mix at the top end of the table. Will Luton stick with him? Could be similar to Ainsworth at QPR unfortunately.
Comments
They are punk, though. In selling out at the first hint of money.

You have said it (not just in this post, but your others) as succinctly as possible, I think. Spot on!
I think we know what the chairman thinks from his open letter to the fans. He’s very pissed off with Ainsworth.

What I can't understand is why Mrs Barton is still living with this violent individual.

Gillingham very much less so.
I'm guessing it's complicated...

Getting back to the good guy and away from the odious Barton, first interview at Gillingham.
First Interview | Gareth Ainsworth | Gillingham F.C.
Good luck Gareth.

He'd have been in for a shock if he had gotten the Hearts job he applied for.
And as for the Spanish one.....
That sounds like you're adding 30mins to the commute, unless you're saying Finch to Gillingham takes 3hours 20!
I thought he looked a little sheepish in the interview, though that can be highly subjective as we have seen with the Dodds Body Language Seminar.
Either way, it's a little hard to rally the new troops when they know you just left the old troops under fire in a foxhole!

It’ll be fascinating to see how he does there. Gillingham should surely be aiming for the middle of L1 in a couple of years.
I thought that only concerned plumbers!

Michael Appleton becomes the new Shrewsbury manager
Anybody who watched his interview after getting Macclesfield promoted knows that Robbie Savage is the new Gareth Ainsworth. Incredibly.
