Well if you think jumping into a tackle and planting your studs on the lads right foot in a wide position rather than staying on your feet and trying to delay was a sensible decision then we may as well just agree to disagree. Laird rolled around like an absolute arse but that was a red all day long.
It wasn't a sensible call no, but he wasn't going to be able to "see" someone into the corner, when he had yards on him and was imminently going to either cross or cut in on goal.
Thankfully the majority of posters have taken a level headed view of today’s game but there are a couple who should perhaps calm down before using words like cowards and disgrace. Birmingham have gone 18 games without defeat, have lost only two games all season and are undefeated in 17 home games in which they have conceded just 7 goals. I agree that we started too timidly but going down to ten men was a major setback against such a good team and we defended exceptionally well in the second half. I was disappointed with our first half display but take encouragement from the second half. We’re still second and haven’t lost a single game by more than one goal.
Agree with a lot said already. First half is best forgotten. We looked physically and emotionally drained at times and lacked any kind of composure. And then just as we get a foothold we lose a player to a mad rush of blood. Second half was a fantastic display of character and no little endeavour at times, but lacking that final bit of quality. I think it was Kone that brought the ball down, sprayed the ball out for the cross that Udoh couldn’t adjust himself to turn in? What a presence, what a player.
So reasons to be cheerful and hopeful.
A shame about the Terry Turbo that couldn’t contain himself and had to be dragged out kicking and screaming. Grey tracksuit yoof (a rather comedic figure I thought) had obviously triggered them. I had a couple of goons behind me in the safe standing section trying to smash seats, with the reasoning that ‘they have 29,000 of them.’ Some people shouldn’t be let out. But the majority of the faithful were loud and proud compared to a very subdued home crowd.
Take nothing away from Birmingham. They are an excellent side for the level, possibly on a par with the Ipswich side that did the double jump.
Very proud of our second half performance. MD made a tactical change going to 3 at the back and it worked brilliantly, especially with Sonny marshalling the defence.
Our away support was magnificent and very loud and proud throughout.
Birmingham are an excellent side and it was truly great to see us go toe to toe with them in the second half with only 10 men.
I hope Dan Harvie isn’t that badly injured and is back ASAP.
As an aside to the day, my 3 friends and I were denied access to the free shuttle bus from the stations to the stadium. Apparently, it's only for City fans. Strange attitude.
Thought we were very poor first half and so disappointed. As the clock struck 45 mins thought we got away with it without too much punishment ready for a right go in the second half.
Then the sending off. Really sorry but bollocks is that a red. Never. Ever. It is a yellow. It is reckless tackle. It is not dangerous. He caught him on the ankle ie on the ground. It was not a clear goal scoring chance. I have seen several views suggesting it was a red. Under the letter of the law it simply wasn’t, despite being a daft challenge to make. Really hope we appeal.
after that so proud of the lads. Thought would get thumped but they were magnificent second half. And we might have stumbled on a formula as three at the back just might work if the wing backs are attacking minded and midfielders not too defensive.
also good to chat to a couple of 20 something Birmingham fans on train home who could not be more complementary about us as a club and how we played today.
On reflection there are reasons to be optimistic here. Until Norris was given the signal to experience an injury, we looked appalling trying to play our usual passing around at the back game. Birmingham had done their homework and their press was outstanding. Fair play to Dodds for switching tactics as had we tried that all game we could have been humiliated.
Had Simons not committed a red card foul we may well have got something and again well done to Dodds for another tactical shift that meant we looked pretty solid despite being a man down and up against a team that would likely be mid table championship or more if they were in it Tiks season.
Some head scratching for Dodds on Monday and if we get a win on Tuesday then it’s game on again.
We were down the front and the acoustics were odd, making it see quite quiet from behind us although I’m sure it wasn’t. Decent pre-match fry-up at a cafe near the bus station meant the dodgy chips weren’t required. £4.50 to park less than a mile from the ground.
100% agree with @Ed_ Top Tannoy Man today…we all knew very clearly who the subs were, didn’t we?
First half poor, was worried when I saw Alfie May was starting for them…does he ever lose against Wycombe?
as the season has gone on, teams have worked out that the high press gets results against wycombe, we end up going long ball up to Udoh who isn’t a Sam Vokes character striker by any means.
But teams can’t keep up the high press for ever and second half we got much more into the game.
on to Burton, Peterborough and Wrexham…three winnable games.
Mate, he lunged in came off the floor and his studs caught the ankle. It was dangerous play, and even if he hadn’t caught the ankle it can still be a red if perceived as dangerous by the ref. There doesn’t even actually need to be contact.
He tackled. He was late on the tackle. He wasn’t high or dangerous with the tackle, just late. Got up swiftly after rolling around. Every tackle could be considered a lunge by your definition. Studs weren’t up.
Simons red card was for serious foul play, it was red all day long...
SERIOUS FOUL PLAY
A tackle or challenge that endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force or brutality must be sanctioned as serious foul play.
Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force or endangers the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play.
Nothing troubling about the overall performance today imo. We're definitely it playing with the same oomph that we were early in the season, but I think we were overachieving then and have regressed to the mean. Nonetheless, I think our 'standard' level is enough for autos - although I anticipate it going to the final day, even if we beat Wrexham.
You might sometimes get away with a yellow, but no complaints at all as far as I'm concerned with the red card. It was late, reckless and with raised studs. Poor decision making from Simons.
Yes the reaction ftom the Birmingham player was annoying, but that shouldn't distract from how poor a challenge it was.

It always used to be the starting team sheet that was interesting in previous seasons.
Now the bench is just as interesting!
I can't even begin to imagine how mad the summer window will be.
I hope @shev pops up with the MotM thread soon. I hope he’s not taking an extended leave.

I’d like to see Franco back in the side. Norris looks confident but Franco’s distribution is way better and crucial to the way we want to play.

Sadly I think he’s gone after getting dog’s abuse for showing basic human decency. We’ve lost quite a few of the good ones recently.

It was a red unfortunately but we’re still second. I have my parking booked for Tuesday and I ain’t driving back without a win.

The red is a yellow without the player rolling on the ground and 30,000 home fans yelling for a red.

Oh please, Birmingham aren't a huge club.
They’re a shit Aston Villa
A bus stop in Bromsgrove
First English club to win a major European trophy 🤷♂️ I'd say they're *big* if not huge.

We'd get laughed out of the room trying to appeal that. If that's a Birmingham player no one's complaining.
As I said in my original post: bollocks

Agreed.
Debatable if was red but it was later than a Northern Rail service at high speed. Ref probably had to give it. No chance of appeal.
Excellent commitment from our lad mind. Wasn't malicious. Just mistimed.
No criticism of Simons - can't fault the commitment, just a bit OTT. I think Ofoborh got sent off for a similar challenge early in his Wycombe career.
Simons had to do that because the defence were nowhere.
The manager..sorry head coach's fault no?

Have you just done a1.01 course in statistics @flymofrank ?!
