By the looks of things Bakinson is going to be the same as Franco with us all, a bit marmite as they say. Personally I agree with above, I think he looks a bit lazy, I wouldn't expect him to get anywhere near our starting 11 if everyone is available.
I assume Harvie was subbed as he is only just back from injury & we were protecting our first choice LB plus it gave Reach a run out too.
Barkinson has grown on me and I think he goes under the radar a bit as he does a lot of the scrappy unsung stuff that Scowen did last season in that position; often it is as simple as being in the right position to prevent their attackers getting forward.
Westergard still looks a few weeks away from being fully match fit & up to speed with the rest of midfield, but he had some nice touches and could/should/ought to have scored. It will be interesting to see how Simmons fits in (presumably in place of Leahy).
Lowry looks like he will grow into the role Humphreys currently fills, which is great for next season.
We are blessed to have plenty of cover at CB with Low, Taylor, Sonny, Anders & Skura. We are however light at RB for now, though I felt Skura did a decent job as a stand in but his positioning was a bit off at times, it will be interesting to see who gets the nod on Saturday given Grimmer & Pattenden appear to be back in training & we brought in Back.
I can see why people are Marmite about Bakinson. His role is to do nothing apart from allow others to do something. In much the way Butcher does nothing but so much at the same time. Whether he does nothing as well as he could or whether he is suited to that role I am not sure. Break up an attack, win the ball, see a pass, make a pass, allow an attack to form. Being that player that screens the defence is pretty thankless and frustrating for some. We have options if he is not to be that player. I was hoping that Westergaard was going to be that player... not yet, maybe not even this season.
Stupid question about Westergaard for our global football fans. How much of his career has been played on grass (no I am not making an accusation)? I have seen quite a lot of clips of him playing on artificial surfaces and wondered if the transition might be harder.
I also couldn't believe that Bakinson was still on the pitch in the end. The amount of attacks he ruined with poor touches, poor passes, or poor crosses was almost uncountable. I was tearing my hair out watching him. There seemed to be lots of agreement on the coach home that he's out of his depth in this midfield
Even after offloading a fair few in January, there's going to be a heck of a clear-out in the summer if we go up (probably even if we don't) and Bakinson will be among it - he's too inconsistent.
He does love a lofted past that is 20 yards too long.
But I think we all know we had near perfection with the first half of the season middle 3 and are really trying hard to work out what's the best solution.
Simons hopefully makes a big improvement, but I am slightly nervous about how we're going to get Westy starting regularly.
Lowry does seem to be the long term Humphreys.
And Anders you think will be the long term mainstay at the back too
I’m not for one moment doubting Kone’s importance to us, but to put things into perspective, even if you take away his goals we’ve still scored more than half the teams in our division so it’s not accurate to say we offer very little without him.
Also, Bez was generally playing up against Liam Lindsay, who was outstanding for North End - won everything in the air and never gave Bez a moment's peace with the ball at his feet. By far their best player, I thought. And our other forward players (for understandable reasons) were often distant from Bez, leaving him isolated and easy to pick off.
We give the opposition much more momentum when he doesn’t play and sit back a lot more. It puts pressure on the midfield and we demonstrably have less possession.
I don’t think we’d have turned down £6m for the rest of our strike force combined, so he clearly brings something extra to the lineup.
A guy sat near me at the game didn't stop berating Bez. Not only does it ruin the enjoyment of the game for others this sort of relentless negativity, but it makes you wonder why people like that bother turning up. Seemed like a pre determined grudge, because he didn't praise anything good Bez did. I knew he was a fair weather supporter when he exclaimed "who?" to the new players coming on, including Dan Udoh (who isn't that new!).
“Bez” cannot be faulted when it comes to work rate and determination but someone earlier in the season said he (or was it Dan Udoh?) had a clever knack of getting close enough to defenders to unsettle them but not close enough to be blown up for a foul.
I wasn’t at the match yesterday but I listened to @bluntphil’s excellent commentary on WanderersTV and I lost count of the number of times “and now on to Lubala” was followed by “Lubala fouls/gives away a free kick”. Phil mentioned that Preston have committed more fouls this season than any other team in the Championship. I haven’t seen the final stats but for much of the game our foul count was well ahead of Preston’s. Lubala was clearly a major contributor.
Until you said the Udoh bit, I thought if ever there has been a time where you can ask who some of our newbies are, it's after bringing 12 in, in a window!
I was at Franchise once surrounded by a beered up bunch berating our players one of whom had to keep telling the loudest he was getting the names wrong.
Luckily, it being MK I was able to easily move seats.

Also liked the look of Lowry, just hoping he gets a new song soon.
Brian and Michael forcibly evicted from thread....
Usually two tosses.
Yep, and we still are by some distance. Comfortably the most clinical team in the league by that measure.
I saw the Preston captain point to their end at the coin toss pre penalties so they definitely chose. Just hope Josh didn’t choose to go second!

Oh I just realised James Berry was cup tied

Roll on Saturday
Steve Evans and Derek Adams?
Oh, sorry, tosses
I only listened to the 3CR radio commentary and Bakinson was being criticised all the time,
mainly about giving te ball away

I do love Bez, but yesterday for a while it seemed like he’d turned into a fouling machine.
The problem for Bakinson is when he’s playing well you tend not to notice what he does, whereas when he has a poor game he stand outs.

It's worrying to ask whether our 850k marquee signing is actually used to playing on grass!
Made me laugh though.

His last club had a plastic pitch, the one before that grass
Anders has played on plastic at home for a couple of years with Molde but had plenty of exposure to grass back in Denmark. It's an interesting point.
If Kone and Morley were in that side we’d have won comfortably.
Kone and is real handful and occupies two defenders freeing up the rest of the attack. We offer very little without him.
We haven't won a league game without Kone or Morley scoring in almost two months
Agree. Also remember the same thing about Michael Simpson
I’m not for one moment doubting Kone’s importance to us, but to put things into perspective, even if you take away his goals we’ve still scored more than half the teams in our division so it’s not accurate to say we offer very little without him.

I just watched the highlights and was surprised to see the Wanderers playing in red while the supporters were in
their normal colours. But then I noticed similar changes in other cup matches. Is this just an effort to sell more shirts?
🤣🤣🤣
