Of course, it's never going to be perfect. I just don't see why an increased budget means we have to abandon principles that have worked so well for over 10 years. Anyway my previous comment wasn't aimed at Lowry, I don't anything about the kid, I'm sure he'll latch on to the Wycombe way.
BTY sorry Beechrdswan see you started thread earlier with a club X video for Alex - came off X a while ago on day Wycombe launched on Bluesky, but we are not edgy enough on bsk to get the video yet 😂
He is young and lost his mother at 19. That's going to rock even the hardiest of us.... but at 19 that's a catastrophic life event. Its no wonder he lost his way a bit and probably questioned everything around him. He was likely angry and confused and knocked completely for six.
I back us to give him a nurturing environment where he will find his feet in football again and to become an excellent signing for us.
Oh right. I honestly did not make that connection given the three players mentioned. Not sure ducking out of a header necessarily meant Jakubiak was a dodgy character, did it? Just disappointing as a player. Unless someone is ITK and I missed that as well.
No matter what, I think we have peaked with the character assessment, as having a combination of Blooms, Bayo, JJ and Gape as your generals is a once in a lifetime situation. I don't think we'd ever be able to replicate that, but I'd like us to keep trying!
That being said, I remember an interview with either GA or Dobbo where they said that part of the assessment was whether players were willing to take the lower Wycombe pay and buy into the underdog culture. That part would be very difficult now, as we have Harlington, an academy on the way, and more money to offer.
Someone referenced Grimmer, and I think he has a lot riding on his shoulders now, as he is the only one (bar Wheeler who doesn't play much) who has really seen a big chunk of that successful arc from the old days, through to Blooms and the current situation. I expect the likes of Vokes and GMac are big leaders too, but with them not in the team quite as much, it is probably a little tougher.
Don't forget Darius..he is a shining example of what we tried to do for people and then how they would repay that faith in bucket loads. What a special place we had for so many years.
Based on nothing other than the YouTube highlights the prospect of Humphreys and Lowry playing together is quite exciting.
We've had the odd 'flair' midfield player before but I think you tend to get more from them if combined with a couple of others with a similar skillset and ability level.
As I say, total guesswork based on a few video clips. But fingers crossed 🤞
The original point was not about bottling or not bottling but someone pointing out that GA and Dobbo signed players (including Jakubiak) who failed a character test with the suggestion that any sort of character test was not foolproof and therefore not a completely trustworthy metric...or something. I did not recall him being a bad egg though I do recall him dropping like a stone rather than sticking his head in...
Of course, one wonders how Blooms himself passed such character tests, conning Gareth and St Dobbo of Hampshire into making him a coveted General.
Furrow your brow at his Colchester betrayal, wince as he laughs at us from his Luton pile, rage as he shamelessly steals under-contract Kone from us and cry for ‘Ruthless’ Dan Rice - cruelly robbed of another dismissal opportunity.
The funny thing about Colchester is that Rob Couhig is on record as saying he encouraged the move as prep for him being future Wycombe manager, to the point where Blooms thought RC didn't like him and wanted him out the door.
RC played a blinder, too - Blooms negotiated Colchester paying for his Pro License as part of the contract!
'No Dan, there's no clause preventing bids for our players, but have you seen item vii) in Lee Peacock's exit documents? Looks like you've got to wear bunny ears for every home game for two months...'

Gaz and Dobbo didn't always get the character test 100% right though. Alex Jakubiak, Jason Banton, and Josh Parker all spring to mind
🦆

Alex's loan spell at Hearts did not work out, but I really like what I see here...lets see how our club can help him develop like Anis did etc etc...

Most of the clips are youth teams naturally but a few against adult defenders etc.
2 great Scots characters I think at the club too, to take him under their wing ...one being club captain may have been an influence too...

Post of the day.
I came here to say basically the same thing.

Good luck and welcome to the family Alex.
Welcome Alex - do your stuff and star with a great club in our promotion run. 👍👍
Nobody ever said GA got right 100% of the time, certainly not when he was here @WanderingDays but he was largely successful I would say.
Do those three prove that having any sort of 'character test' is a waste of time?
flymo...never had you down as one of the 'Watch out! You can't say things like that on here' brigade.
As for Alex Lowry I hope this is the start of the best period of his career.
Huh? That's the customary Jakubiak duck.

No, that's just what he's become (in)famous for. I don't remember a character issue.
Don't forget Darius..he is a shining example of what we tried to do for people and then how they would repay that faith in bucket loads. What a special place we had for so many years.
And we still have.
In the days when you were hopelessly poor,
I just liked you more.
I get that.
That makes me think that we are soon going to hear opposition supporters singing ‘where were you when you were s - - t’.

Yep. Not risking getting utterly smashed when going for one header at a club you're only on loan at, doesn't quite make you Joey Barton.
He was never going to get smashed. He bottled it pure and simple.
We need the footage to have a poll on this.
