Sonny Bradley signs

  • Random view from a Luton fan, for what it's worth:

"Bradley was done at Championship level when he left us. Was surprised that Derby kept him around in the summer for that reason. He actually played against us a couple of weeks ago. He isn't a particularly mobile player so you definitely need him surrounded with the right players so he isn't exposed, but he's still got a decent brain for reading the game.

He's also much better on the ball than given credit for, plays some lovely passes through the lines when given the opportunity to do so."

  • I think this signing is a clear sign that we have moved away from the RC era. Do you think Derby would sanction this move if Rob was still Chairman / Owner? Clear sign that senior management have done a lot of bridge building since our last communication with Derby.

  • I would imagine it’s as simple as Derby wanting to free up a squad place. He was highly sought after when he went to Derby as an out of contract player, so you’d expect him to be on big wages too.

  • Thanks to coming down with the flu I missed yesterday's time-honoured dismiss a player before he's even played for us thread. It's a rare occasion that a League One side will be signing a player on loan from a Championship club that fans of the Championship club will be disappointed is being loaned out. Usually it'll be players that are out of favour who need game time, so at least wait until Bradley shanks a clearance over the Woodlands stand in the fifth minute before slagging him off.

As to whether it shows a lack of ambition, there is still a fair amount of time before the transfer window shuts for Dan Rice to show his worth on the recruitment front.

  • Signing a Championship player that has got promotion from league one is not a lack of ambition. It's signing someone who has been there done that and knows what's needed to handle the pressure of getting promoted. He is 33 not 38 so not to old. Did we say that about Bayo who helped us to the play off final at 40.I think he is a very astute signing, someone who will give his all for the next half a season.

  • You don't get it, do you. This is the ancient Mayan prophesy fulfilled. "When the illustrated man from the north land comes unto the Valley of the Wye, the town shall fall unto ruin."

  • If the Sonny rises in West Wycombe then the day of judgement will be upon us

  • I cooked up a great post last night involving Blooms never having heard of the guy and calling him Bradley Sunshine. Anyway, Bradley Sunshine is such a good name that's what i'm going to call him moving forward.

  • Bradley Sunshine is a CBBC character if ever there was one. Probably fewer tats though.

Anyway, that’s what I’ll be calling him too.

  • You won't be calling him that tonight if he comes on and scores an own goal

  • Doesn't Bradley Sunshine present the morning show on GBNews?

  • He looks like a unit as they say. Welcome Mr Sunshine.

  • Hello

    Derby fan here (in peace)

I will be interested to see how Sonny does for you.

We were very excited when he came to Derby. Warne wanted to (still wants to whenever he can) play 5-3-2 and we thought Sonny would become the dominant centre back in that backline. He had a pretty iffy start the first few games (defensive errors) and was at fault (at least partially) for some goals we let in. More generally the team wasn't taking to a 5-3-2 and Warne reverted to 4 at the back after a few games. Sonny was the man sacrificed partly because of form but also because of formation and Cashin and Nelson were the favoured 2 with Sonny on the bench

He then barely played for the middle section of the season but came back into the side towards the end (we changed formation a bit IIRC). And he actually did pretty well then and I would say he was important in getting us over the line and he didn;t make the errors in games he made in his his first few. Warne spoke about his leadership qualities.

Although stats show he played 30 games forus last season, I suspect only 15ish of those were starts.

So my sense is that if he comes to you and has a good couple of first few games, and his confidence is good, he could do very well for you and be the Sonny that helped get us over the line and be consistent and influential. My sense is that he has an error in him (don't all players) and when his confidence is lower they come out more frequently and when it is high they are far less frequent. So I think how he starts will be more important

He could have just sat on his nice fat wage at Derby doing not a lot. The fact he has decided to come to you shows he has desire to play. That means something I think

Hope that ramble is of interest!

  • He starts tonight and we might just be going three at the back for the first time in months.

    Thanks for the friendly post

  • So Bradley makes the all-time squad of players with a first name for a surname. He joins the likes of Rob Lee and, well, does Harvie count?

  • Agreed. Managers do have some say. At Derby we have a recruitment team these days, backed by a stats based scientific team and the financial guys. PW gives them a list of positions/roles he wants filling together with some suggestions of players for those roles. The rest is out of his hands until a deal is looking likely then he chats to the play outlining what the player can expect of him and the club and what he and the club expect of him. If a signing doesn't work out, it's the Head Coach that gets the flack.

With regard to Sonny Bradley. It never worked out for him at Derby. Made some mistakes early doors with us, quite a few of which led to goals against and he's not really been able to nail down a run of starts. Fans expected we'd got ourselves a decent Championship level having played 20 games in Luton's promotion to the Premier League season. He'd also skippered the side and we thought we'd got a leader in. His performances were adequate at best and he showed little leadership on the pitch. 4th choice CH this season and, had Jake Rooney been fit, Sonny might have been 5th choice. In his final Rams appearance at Sheff Wed, he got roasted for pace in the lead up to their first, IMO, any pace he had seems to have gone. Can't blame him for effort but his best days are behind him.

I hope he rediscovers his form with you guys and doesn't derail you promising promotion push.

  • Did well last night, thought he was one of the better players for us.

Only the second-ever Sonny to play for Wycombe after Sonny Ball and he never made the first team.

  • My prediction is for Sonny to be a real star player in the second half of the season.
