Match Day Thread: Blackpool

  • I can see the appeal in a fine cigar, a glass of port and a game of chance be it cards or flatulence .

  • A less than complimentary view from the Tower:

    ”Thoughts after going yesterday…

The idea of Wycombe being in the Champ is laughable on a number of levels. First they can’t fill their small ground, gaps all over the place.

Can only assume their pace, guile and craft must have come from the two loan players who were recalled by parent clubs earlier this week. Because they created very little even with 11 and couldn’t even string together passages of passing.

Looking at that, Birmingham and Wrexham will stroll the division unless Huddersfield continue to improve and put Wrexham under pressure.”

Only needed “time wasting” for a full house.

  • From a Blackpool fan? When they had the most hilariously crap low capacity ever in an even higher division a mere 13-14 years ago!?

These fans never put it down to their team turning up hell bent on a point and offering next to nothing as an attacking force do they?

And taking a full 35mins or so against 10 men to finally luckily scrape a draw.

  • tbf to them, we did not play well at all or create much against them, so basing their views on that ...really looking forward to seeing sads back as he offers something different ....Gmac and Fred look spent ....they need a rest ....get Kodua in the starting line up!

  • In fairness, that’s one silly opinion plucked from many bemoaning how insipid they were, even against 10 men. Like many fanbases, theirs is full of bitterness about how things were better in the old days and how poor ownership has ruined them. Seems like half the EFL can make a similar case.

I do find it funny when I see people post about how we’re not gonna go up because we’re crap - one or two bad performances out of a few dozen, anyone would think they watched us every week!

In fairness to Blackpool, their town is now one of the bleakest seaside resorts in the country and they’ve recently lost their heritage trams so they’re probably already on a downer.

  • Absolutely no sinus of them anywhere

  • I like it when rival "bigger" clubs mock us and our stadium, because it often means we are doing well and under their skin.

I doubt many are mocking Burton right now!

  • I'm not sure any team managed by Steve Bruce has much right to talk about 'pace, guile and passages of passing'. What a shit team we are, making clubs like Super Massive Blackpool have to scramble for late equalisers in both fixtures, despite being gifted an undeserved numerically advantage in the latter. We have got way above our station.

  • The early rivalry with ‘The Nose’ was nothing to be sneezed at…..

Headline from the BFP Sept 1887 ‘New boys Wanderers inflict bloody nose on local rivals’.

Although perhaps this is a tissue of lies?

  • Back to the original title of this thread.

I believe that the Hartridge sending off was down almost entirely down the inconsistent referee.

When you look at the penalty which we got, the last defender was not booked. I understand that Kone wasn't heading through directly on goal, hence it was never a sending off. Kone appeared on the blind side of the defender, nipped in quick & we had a deserved penalty the defender acknowledged his mistake so we moved on. All fair and reasonable I thought

My view of the Hartridge tackle, (which I believe @Wendoverman has a similar view), was that the attacker came from the blind side of Hartridge and he made the same "mistake". So why did Hartridge get a second yellow when the Blackpool defender didn't. As a poster on here mentioned, why with a two yard start, get into that scenario in the first place. I know he came from the blind side, but surely you are aware, as a professional player, that you are not going to be given all the time you want?

Other inconsistencies by the referee include head injuries. When a Blackpool player went down rubbing his head, very early doors, (when anyone who has played or refereed the game) would know that there was nothing wrong with him, he didn't require a trainer/physio, he wasn't even impacted on his head. Yet Humphries, (to me), was apparently caught by a flailing boot, but the ref insisted play carry on? 🤷‍♂️

I thought also the ball was supposed to be still when taking a goal kick/free kick, not rolling. Is it not the job of the lino to point out this transgression if the referee doesn't see it or am I out of touch? Maybe the only job of the linesman is to flag for offsides. Not even sure they can make up their minds as to which way the throw ins are anymore as the linesman nearly always looks at the referee for confirmation these days before they make a decision.

Maybe I'm just old and remember football at a Sunday league level, before rolling on the floor was greeted with derision and if you went down you stayed down, genuinely injured.

  • Yep, agree with this. Ditto Blooms post match comments. I personally didn't have a problem with the 2nd yellow for Hartridge. It could be judged as a little bit harsh, but it was clumsy and he can't have any real complaints. Apart from the Humphries incident, I thought his decision making was fine, it was just the inconsistencies with the yellow cards that was so frustrating. The penalty challenge on Kone was clearly a worse challenge than Hartridge's 2nd booking, yet he didn't produce the yellow card. Scowen was correctly booked for handball in the 1st half, but 2 Blackpool players were penalised for handball in the 2nd half, but no bookings. The 2nd one to be fair, was probably more inadvertent, but the 1st one was a clear, deliberate handball that stopped our attack.

I thought nowadays the lino and ref communicate directly over their headsets and the flagging was for the benefit of the players and watching public - hence they will appear to look at each other before deciding which way to give a throw and before the lino flags.

Do they use headsets at league 1 level, I don't know?

Re Hartridge - I too thought the second booking for Hartridge was harsh and inconsistent with the earlier non-booking for the defender who fouled Kone. He was merely blindsided by the attacker and caught out. The initial booking for Hartridge was perfectly correct given how late his lunge was, and it was a deliberate act to stop the defender.

  • To be fair @EwanHoosaami it was the first yellow I thought was harsh (the one over our side) though it was a foul. I could not comment on the second one at the time but it seems like a yellow on the replays There were a couple of attacks on Kone that were not even penalised...and in one case the defender leapt on his back and got a free kick. It's the old question of consistency I suppose...the yellow cards for Blackpool players at the end when we were messing about in corners seemed soft to me. Stuff goes on right in front of linos that they seem to ignore...how long before robo-line judges come in?

  • It was probably the most nailed on yellow card in the history of football.

About 3 hours late, possibly about 2.3miles off the ball, and 93% of the terrace were thinking they could have moved quicker.

(These estimates might be slight over exaggerations to stress the point)

  • I didn't have a good view of the first yellow for Hartridge but I was sat in the second row of Block C for the second (it was right in front of me) and you could clearly hear the contact. Joseph went down like he was shot and was briefly screaming "argh, my effing ankle", before his miraculous recovery, which may have influenced the referee. It was a poorly timed late challenge and probably a yellow IMO. I thought he'd got away with it initially but maybe the linesman was also swayed by the screams and writhing and had a word. As said about the rest, it's the inconsistency by which the rules are applied that is most frustrating.

  • Tbh I thought they were both yellow cards, as soon as the 2nd happened I said to my mate... that's him gone

  • Yep, it's baffling people are trying to argue the opposite.

  • Never know on the gasroom. There's usually some fairly wild takes aboot.

  • I thought it was a foul but a harsh card...but that's me. The second one certainly looked bad from the (whatever we are called now) Stand. I understand other opinions are available.

Even if they are wrong. 😉

  • Has Hartridge been banished yet? Or do we accept that players make mistakes and he'll probably play for us again?

  • I think Trevor Stroud was responsible for his signing against Matt's wishes as part of the new owners plan not to get promoted as it ruins his plans, it was bound to end in tears
