Former Sunderland Academy Player Charged with Murder Following Death of Non-League Footballer
James Hitchcock, a non-league footballer and goalkeeper for Barton Town FC, has tragically died after an alleged assault during a night out in York last weekend. A man from the North East has been charged with his murder.
Hitchcock, a married father of one, sustained serious injuries during an incident at York railway station on Sunday night. Despite receiving medical care, he passed away in hospital on Wednesday.
British Transport Police have confirmed the arrest and charging of 22-year-old Mckenzie Dicicco from Stockton-on-Tees with murder and affray. Dicicco, a former Sunderland under-18s academy player and non-league footballer, is set to appear at York Magistrates’ Court.
Authorities reported that officers were called to York railway station around 8:45 PM GMT on Sunday after Hitchcock, in his 30s, suffered severe head injuries.
Barton Town FC released an official statement mourning the loss of their goalkeeper:
“Barton Town FC are devastated to announce that following a serious head injury, our First Team goalkeeper James Hitchcock has passed away peacefully in hospital.”
The club expressed their condolences, saying:
“Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, April, their young son, Freddie, his parents, family, and friends.
Have to look at wether new signings are kicking on and adding to the team or it's all regressing, Savio, Doku, Kovacic not great , Kdb, Gundogan, Walker , Grealish ageing. Best young players seem to have been let go. Palmer, Alvarez, Morgan doing well elsewhere.
Potentially could get the chequebook out but would cost Billions to return them anything like where they were a couple of years ago.
Felt horrible to be cheering on Bristol Rovers! Pleased to see them claim a fortune point though. Wrexham were generally very solid and clearly the better side, but rather uninspiring up front. Rovers were awful, clearly low on confidence, but hung on in there and scored from their only chance.
Look at this this way: If Bristol Rovers were any kind of threat, we would not be cheering them. As it is, they are getting a patronizing pat on the head from league leaders Wycombe after scraping a home draw. More demeaning than us cheering against them!
The American soap opera schmaltz, being nip and tuck with us, and McLean's snarling face mean i couldn't for even a second care about it being Rovers! They're achieving nothing this year, so it's brilliant they've made up for our 2 missed points yesterday.

See PNL have signed Rowett as manager
Wrexham 1 up away to the horse punchers to move level on points with us
Not sure if this had already been picked up on, but some Pompey fans have been banned for their behaviour at AP last season https://www.thamesvalley.police.uk/news/thames-valley/news/2024/december/16-12-2024/men-sentenced-for-football-related-offences--high-wycombe/
Morgan Rogers having a storming game for Villa vs City. Another one who got his break on loan at our level - the pyramid is so special.
Must be time to revamp ffp rules, what has the world come to when a plucky oil state literally can't buy a win.
No need to change the rules actually, they haven't ever followed them.
The horse punchers make it 1-1
Lovely Rovers equaliser. Mad defending from the Wrexham guy, thought he had an hour to let a ball bounce in his own area.
Hold that now Rovers then yesterday doesn't feel too bad.
Rovers equaliser against Wrexham
Promise Omichere continues to have a significant impact on Wycombe
Could we see the unthinkable and Pep getting the sack.
They are on a terrible run with only 4 points from 8 League games, joint bottom with Southampton who’ve just sacked Russell Martin.
At risk of dropping out of the Champions League and out of the League Cup.
Salford must fancy their chances in the FA Cup.
Pulled one back 👀
What has my life become? I’m celebrating a Bristol Rovers goal.
Oxford now in the relegation zone after wins for Portsmouth and Hull.
Good result that for us.
McLean utterly unnecessarily piling into a scuffle nothing to do with him. Charming fella.
Great to see Wrexham are in the habit of throwing points away late on
Not inconceivable that City will finish the weekend as low as 9th. You really love to see it.
Has to be a chance Brum run away with the league and strengthen even more in January but that league table still looking very good.
It feels a bit like when Moyes took over United. You look at the names on the team sheet and assume it'll quickly turn round, but doesn't.
Although Moyes never went anything like 1 win in 12 or so games.

They certainly don't seem to have got a signing right for a long time.
Glad it's not just me.

Shrewsbury 1-0 down to Wigan already.
Conceded from a corner again
Bryan Morris scores for Newport against the franchise.
Watching Ipswich-Newcastle, and you could drive a tractor through the gaps in the Ipswich defence.
Make that 2 for Bryan Morris against the franchise.
