I wouldn’t say “”didn’t he do sod all”. He was making all the same runs as he did during the 6m in the he was on fire, just no one was picking him out. I’m prepared to die on that hill as I distinctly remember him getting in excellent positions running off of full backs and we just never passed to him. He was several steps too far ahead of some of our players at that time. It then clicked, we found him in those spaces and he caught fire.
A quick wiki suggests there was interest in him from Man City and Blackburn in the premier league that didn’t happen. Had we blocked those from happening (which, FWIW, I don’t think we’d do today because of potential knock on effect of player happiness) I can forgive him being more than a little annoyed. He then went into championship side Plymouth. A level where he spend the majority of the rest of his career.
Fair enough, he wouldn't be the first or last striker we haven't got the best out of at times. I thought he scuffed quite a lot of chances early on but it was all a long time ago.
Difficult to know if paper interest turned into bids, seems a bit odd that we'd turn down reasonable bids from top clubs then let him go out on loan to Plymouth.
As I mentioned in my edit - Plymouth were a championship team at the time of the loan and subsequent sale, so it would have been seen as a step up in every sense of the word. You can’t blame an ambitious player too much for having to force a move (if that’s what he did) to progress up the footballing ladder. Especially if he’d already seen a chance at the Prem slip by.
@HolmerBlue raises a bit of an interesting question for me though. Do we really need to have warmed to a player for him to be considered in with a shout for best 11? Would Dave Carroll have been anywhere near this list if he was rude, arrogant and aloof with fans, for example?
I'm not going to be happy with a player we paid a fee for and stood by when he wasn't performing then shithouses his way out after less than a year being decent but each to their own.
Some badboy types actually end up with a bit of an enhanced reputation as people seem to think it must be the managers fault they haven't excellent, and in reality we see so little of what goes on behind the scenes it's all rumours anyway.
Carroll was very talented regardless of attitude but these lists shouldn't really be taken too seriously.
You mean a player that wasn’t performing so much that they earned a position on the leagues team of the year that year, the players player of the year that year and we got a fee for after the initial loan, in return for him leaving?
yeah, each to their own I guess.
But yeah, certainly not worthy of discussion as one of the best players we’ve had who went into a career higher up the leagues, even though it was a brief time with us.
Edit: can we really complain of shithousery with a straight face and be taken seriously?
Having watched since the early 90s these all time XIs are a nightmare! I think making more than 75 appearances should also be a criteria for these things (not that I have verified appearances below!)
First one is what I would love to see as a best XI, the 2nd one is more a favourite players XI excluding those in the best XI:
Best:
Taylor
Cousins Williamson McCarthy Jacobson
McSporran Brown Scowen Guppy
Scott Garner
Favourite:
Hyde
Rogers Crossley Evans Vinnicombe
Simpson Ryan Bloomfield
Carroll Akinfenwa Tyson
Still leaves so many out - Bates, Johnson R, Stewart, Senda, Thompson S, Thompson C, Torres, Martin, Jombati....
My irrational dislike, rational dislike or just never warmed to best XI would be:
Haha! Decent player but just never warmed to him, perhaps irrational but just thought he always gave the impression it was all about him. Not sure he would have got through the door in the Ainsworth era!
Probably due to my dislike of Oxford, Watford and Swindon as well...having never met him I'm sure he's a lovely guy :)
Williamson was one of the few players we've had in the last 15 years or so that I thought was embarrassingly too good for the division we were in.
But the funny thing is that Williamson and Johnson as a combo were probably a bit green when we had them. And there was a strong feeling at the time that we needed a more experienced centre back to help them out.
Ps Guppy would be competitive with Williamson's total. Would have to look it up to see how close.
Try spelling it without cheating. Think Scottish kilt accoutrements.
We were on a Caribbean jazz cruise when Jermaine’s signing was announced - I can’t recall via what medium - but I do remember wondering at the time if it was some kind of joke. That would have been about 25 years ago.
Lets start again i was being a tad daft with my OP, lets just have a legends x1 of players since we become a league club. it's for a large banner to be held. As a side note we have plans for a large waver flag consisting of Frank Adams, Brian Lee, MoN and Gareth Ainsworth, as a memorable figures in Wycombe history. Thank you for your support and ideas. 👍️

My 2 pence worth, i will go with a 442 for now. My best x1

Oh, also, Matty Phillips get in anywhere?
This is epic thread deviation. How on earth did a 1887 Updates thread end up arguing about best ever Wycombe XIs?
At least it's stayed relevant to Wycombe. Usually we end up talking about the meaning of time.
I'm not going to be happy with a player we paid a fee for and stood by when he wasn't performing then shithouses his way out after less than a year being decent but each to their own.

Cos the OP asked on page two 🙂
”Whilst I’m on here, we are looking to have a vote on the best Wycombe 11 since becoming a league side”
The fact it’s still on topic is more surprising than how far off topic a thread could do.
You grant too much credit, it's normally cheese puns.
Threads too Brie-f for that currently. Oops.

Bull
Lawrence Branston Pierre Bell
Currie Lee R Oakes Horgan
Mooney Easter
Special mention to Dean Morgan!
Why am I in your "irrational dislike" team. What have I done to upset you?
Haha! Decent player but just never warmed to him, perhaps irrational but just thought he always gave the impression it was all about him. Not sure he would have got through the door in the Ainsworth era!

JJ is a rare one that I think actually makes the best team, the favourite team and the cult team.
The latter for the goal mad season including a hatrick from left back.

More than Johnson though for sure.
Yep unsavoury conduct towards the end utter sullied the league cup season heroics for me.
Matty Phillips was still playing for West Brom on Saturday...he must be up there with appearances in Champ and Prem??
142 in the Premier League plus 254 in Championship (if Wikipedia is correct).
Could we add a wacky name XI?
Try saying Jermain McSporen without smiling.
Lewwis Spence

Ah apologies @Malone I misunderstood!
I think @Malone may be puzzled as to what you are apologising for.
it’s been a long day!
Wrong poster old son!
Bugger me I’m a muppet
Typically you'd need to fist a muppet.

Just imagine a giant flag with the face of Alan Hutchinson on it, emblazoned with the legend:
‘COME ANY CLOSER AND GET THIS BOOT IN YOUR FACE’
