I’d forgotten about Young. If I recall rightly he came off the bench in a game several weeks back and didn’t make much impact. Haven’t seen him feature at all since.
I keep going on about this but to my mind the defensive line is far to deep all the time. We seem to be so quick to sink back onto the edge of our own box as soon as the opposition have the ball.
At one point last night we set up to defend a free kick taken inside their half with a defensive line inside our box. It was absolutely bizarre.
This is creating all sorts of problems. The main one being that we aren’t compact enough when defending, leaving massive spaces between the defence and midfield. Clearly injuries in central midfield aren’t helping, but the 2/3 central defenders dropping 20 yards behind them gives Wing and Freeman an even tougher job trying to patrol that space.
It also makes it much harder for us to press high and win the ball back inside the opposition half, which used to be a massive feature of our game.
And when we’re hitting long balls forward from defence it has to travel an extra 10-20 yards in the air, making it easier to defend.
Re the midfield debate above, it looked to me as though Wheeler was sitting deeper with Freeman and Wing a bit more advanced and playing either side of him. So comparing Wings tackles to Wheelers is a bit like comparing their shots in target. I felt they both did really well against Port Vale at their jobs overall. Freeman I thought looked a bit leggy 2nd half but not surprised as he has worked his arse off for the team of late with few other options in centre midfield.
Yeah and there is absolutely no excuse for being that standoffish to Gab Sutton. He’s an absolutely outstanding reporter and a great guy. The EFL is incredibly lucky to have his expertise / support. Surely he’s destined for bigger things in the industry.

had a brief chat with Curtis in the car park before Saturdays game - he said he’s back soon, “before Christmas”, but who knows
But as we know, whilst Curtis is the Duracell bunny when fully fit, it takes him longer than most to reach peak fitness.
It is bitterly ironic that the position at we are deepest has been completely decimated.
“We don’t call them subs we call them game changers”
Twat.
Did he say which year?
Even the Black Knight from Monty Python would be back "soon" at this point.
Tis Merely a flesh wound
Is the Black knight available on a free, is he cup tied?
I bet Jack Young is gutted. He could have really made an impression in the absence of senior pros but he’s clearly been injured too.

Played v Peterborough in the pizza cup but seems to have been injured either side of that

I was comparing Wheeler in the Vale game to Wing and Freeman in the previous 4 games - when they were tasked with defensive roles.
@drcongo nails it re Darryl Clarke.
Thoroughly unpleasant tone in his interview.

Very much so. I know Gab and he's a thoroughly nice bloke with far more knowledge of the EFL than most people.
