WHC Season End Awards Dinner

So the season is over and we meet (virtually) this evening to review how we have got on in the inaugural season of the Wycombe Homeless Connection prediction contest.

Well lets be honest we are all pretty crap predictors as we will see when the awards are handed out later this evening.

Saturdays game first and congratulations to @ForeverBlue and @Cecil for finishing the season with a correct score. well done guys.

But really that's where the good news ends. I have attached various analyses below and I am afraid overall our collective predicting season has been poor. Anyone predicting a 1-0, 2-1 or 3-2 hone win every game or a 1-0 or 2-1 loss would have won our predicting league. even a monkey randomly predicting home and away scores between 0 and 3 would have scored 40 points and come in joint third. lets face it we were rubbish.

but nonetheless awards need to be handed out, so here goes

PRIZE 1 - Correct score predictions

No clear winner here. The prize for getting the most correct scores is shared between @Ned_Ludd , @ForeverBlue , @NorsQuarters and @Uncle_T with six correct scores each. Well done each of you. At the other end special mention is required for outstandingly crap predicting goes to @Shev who failed to get a single prediction right all season. hardly a "prediction strong" performance there.

PRIZE 2- the Eric Morecambe Award for getting the correct scores but not necessarily in the right order

this prize is awarded to the predictor whose win/loss/draw predictions get closest to actual points scored by WWFC. Congratulations here @manboobs who predicted a total Wyc points of 55 just two away from correct score. @ryan_w_kirkby and his daughter came in a creditable second.

Most of us though truly crap here too.

@drcongo , @Onlooker and @railwaysteve all predicted that we would comfortably beat the alltime record points total for the division and no less than half of us had us in the playoffs. At the other end @bookertease had us with just 23 points with @Shev , @DevC and @YorkExile doing little better. Miserable gits.

BUT THE BIG PRIZE

and the one we all aimed for - The overall WHC season predictor prize - cue drumroll..................

Well for 75 minutes or so yesterday it was all going so well. My late season surge threatened to result in glory then up popped Joe and my dreams of a final day draw were dashed. Wycombe legend and magnificent servant he may be, but sorry Joe as a result you will for ever be dead to me. So congratulations and well deserved win goes to @OxfordBlue. In contention for much of the season and ahead for the last few weeks, his was a fine consistent effort well deserving of the prize. the prze of course is ............. err precisely nothing - WWFC never did return by emails asking for a gesture - I blame the "power group"!

Thanks again to all for supporting this throughout a long season and raising a worthwhile sum for those in need. I have enjoyed it. I hope you have too.

  • Thanks again @DevC for a fantastic competition, and commiserations on the silver medal. Congrats to @OxfordBlue for taking home the title.

For me, coming 13th with no correct predictions feels like avoiding relegation without having a goalkeeper, so I will take it.

Next season, I am going to buy a Random Prediction Monkey.

  • Good work @DevC. Been a well constructed diversion all season and all for a good cause.

If you thought I was a miserable git this season (when I actually thought we would stay up) just wait for next year when I don’t - especially if Gareth does go!

  • Nice post, @devc.

  • Is the main takeaway from this that there were a lot of home wins in Wycombe games this season?

Thanks for running the competition @DevC

  • Haha... well done @DevC great summerising and well done for keeping it up all season !

Congrats @OxfordBlue !! Good luck in the champions league next season !

  • Thanks @DevC a fun competition for a good cause. Until recently I worked in mental health in Wycombe (now same role but in Bedfordshire) and I know only too well the psychological suffering of being without a home, or feeling too unsafe to stay in one. I’d like to think your efforts have made someone’s life in Wycombe a little easier.

I am also delighted to hold an award named for a comedy genius (with terrible taste in football teams).

  • I understand there is a thread on the Plymouth forum about how poor and pathetic our predictions were. Thanks @devc my lower half finish alleviated somewhat by the thought I'm helping in buying someone a home or something??

  • Thanks for putting this together @DevC it’s been great fun.

  • It really has. Thanks @DevC.

  • Yes, many thanks.
It even helped to bring a very small crumb of comfort if we'd been defeated and I'd pessimistically predicted so.

When does the new season start? It's been sooo long without football.

I hope someone asked them how their fans , players and staff predicted this season would go.
