You suggest that there could be friction between the acting chairman and the head coach that he himself appointed and who has only been with us for a month. To support that opinion you suggest that Mike Dodds publicly criticised players signed by Dan Rice when he did no such thing. He said that the new arrivals (not just the Danes) had to earn their place in the team over the players who have been so successful up to now. What’s wrong with saying that? What would you have said if MD had promoted the new players at the expense of those who got us to second in the table?

This discussion needs to bear in mind that current rules on Championship spending and incoming rules on League One spending, both tying outlay to revenue made January the last window where the owner could pump cash directly in to the squad.

The comments from the club, Dodds included, have been quite clear. They’re not match fit and have been brought in with more than this season in mind.

I’d suggest Berry’s absence is of more concern. His position is one in which we are struggling for consistency and Dodds has suggested that there are simply others ahead of him in the pecking order right now.

I’m assuming the signings we’ve made that included fees have been done so to avoid the tighter financial restrictions coming in from next season. Therefore, whilst frustrating now, it does make some sense.

That said, the true football fan in me would have much preferred two or three immediate starters to have come in and reignite our form, especially out wide.
