Today I saw Amersham Town beat Holmer Green 8-0 in the Combined Counties Division 1, 1st v 20th. I went mainly to see Jake Tabor play.
2-0 at HT, the Magpies dominated play without pressing home their superiority. Tabor had a quiet half, his best chance when put clean through but a heavy touch allowed the keeper to clear.
Soon after the break Tabor was on the scoresheet with a close-in header, and he went on to complete his hat-trick, his third the best, a hard, dipping snap shot from the edge of the area. He now has 42 goals from 25 games in all competitions, with 15 assists. He also has 11 yellow cards but there was nothing in his attitude or style of play to suggest any problem there. I was very impressed with Louis Bircham, who scored two and had an assist. Holmer Green briefly had a good spell in the first half but never really threatened and conceded four in the last 15 minutes. They have been on a downward trajectory recently, but they did get two wins last month against fellow strugglers, to take them out of the relegation zone by a point. Amersham are looking very good for automatic promotion, now 16 points clear at the top.
Jake Tabor played on the left of big target man Richard Pacquette, and switched to the right after the break. He appears to be two footed and is quick, gets into spaces well to receive the ball, is not selfish and lays on chances for others. His main asset, of course, is his incredible goalscoring rate. This is the tenth tier and Holmer are a poor team, so it is difficult to assess whether he can make it in the EFL. We will see if he appears again in a BCD game.
I managed to capture seven of the goals, the missing one was number two, when a mixup between keeper and defender on the edge of the area allowed Pacquette to hook into an empty net. The videos are captioned with the scorer and time, let me know if this link does not work.
The matched kicked off at 2pm, as they have recently, because the floodlights on one side are not working properly. I heard someone say that sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. Today they didn't. The attendance was 82, a few there from Holmer. It costs £6/£4 to get in and they have a good, modern clubhouse.
Tabor’s scoring rate is undeliverable isn't it even at a relatively low level. At this rate he’d get about 80 goals in a season. Extraordinary stuff.
I wonder if he’s still on our radar for the transfer window and what Amersham might want for him.
Another relatively local player that’s also getting noticed because of his goal scoring is Hanwell Town’s Sam Evans. He’s a towering centre forward (6ft 5) but mobile and good with his feet, a bit like a non-league Erling Haaland. He’s only 21 and is banging them in for fun this season.
Would Jake Tabor be on the radar of Chesham Utd, Beaconsfield etc. who play at a higher level than Amersham Town, rather than a step up to Wycombe? Or one for our development squad perhaps…but is he ex-academy, which seems to be what we favour?
Great to see Amersham Town doing well, they have an excellent set up there.
My faith in the accuracy of Wikipedia statistics has been slightly shaken. I was so impressed by the performance of Dean Henderson, making his debut in goal for Crystal Palace yesterday, that I went to Google to remind myself of his career to date. His goalscoring record in nine appearances at Stockport County must be unprecedented.
Coincidentally, I’ve just caught up with yesterday’s EFL results and Josh Stokes’ two late goals in Aldershot’s heavy defeat caught my eye. He’s classed as a midfielder and is not the tallest but 11 goals in 22 games in what is a highly competitive and well funded league are not to be sneezed at. Only 19 and, as you say, with his Ipswich background he’s certain to be on the radar.
We haven’t heard anything recently about Richard Konè. I assume he’s still banging them in for Athletic Newham. There’s an Aldershot connection there of course. He scored against them in a preseason friendly and, I’ve a feeling, against the same opposition recently in a behind closed doors match.
@micra, for the last BCD game against Aldershot, I thought that might have been Lyle Taylor and Jake Tabor who were the two goalscoring trialists, but who knows.
This season Kone has scored 18 goals in 18 games, in all competitions. He last played for Athletic Newham on 25 November, when he received a straight red. Last season he scored 40 in 42. This is in the ninth tier, Essex Senior League.
I was surprised that he's only 27 and with his a record at this level without a club. Couldn't see that he has had significant injury issues apart from a really bad time with Covid. Why haven't clubs come in for him.
So he got let go before he regained full fitness. Harsh.
He always looked good against us. Would love to see him play for us. And a goal scoring record of almost 1 in 5 would deem him prolific in our squad. Lyle Taylor was described as a goal scoring phenomenon when he joined so I don’t have an adjective for 1 in 5.
"Out of contract at the end of the 2022-23 campaign, Pompey subsequently offered the Irishman a new 12-month deal on reduced terms, taking into account his long-term injury.
However, this was rejected and, after remaining for the Blues to oversee his recovery as a duty of care, Curtis is now seeking another club."
Notts Forest could do worse. Nuno has received 11 Manager of the Month awards in his various clubs in the last 9 years. I thought he did OK at Wolves getting them into Europe.

Bournemouth v Luton has been abandoned in the 65th minute after Luton captain Tom Lockyer collapsed.
Wow, saw it was suspended, but hadn't clocked it being abandoned.
Hadn't seen that Lockyer had a heart op in the summer. Hope it turns out alright for him, as you wonder what the route forward is now.
Yes indeed. Terrible for the lad.
Sounds like both sets of fans were classy, too - maybe someone should send the video to Stevenage.
It's been confirmed as a cardiac arrest
His poor family, having been through it once before
Really hope he's ok
Hear hear. Glad to see he is responsive and alert, but it must be a tremendous worry going forward.
Brilliant to see the respect shown by both sets of supporters. The match doesn’t matter in such situations.

Classy from everyone.
I am glad no-one had to ask Steve Evans his opinion...
Thanks Steve, an interesting read.

Great report @Steve_Peart.

Another lower league striker that’s worth keeping an eye on is Josh Stokes at Aldershot.
Only 19 and is banging them in after a summer move from Sudbury.
Interesting to note that he was in the Ipswich academy before joining Sudbury so possibly MB and co are well aware of him.
Ended up going to watch Everton yesterday and watching Burnley try and play it out from the goalkeeper was comical.
Putting themselves under pressure everytime and it more often than not it ended with the goaly just going long with it, pointless.

Twitter says Ronan Curtis.
Kone and MEGA KONE
Leicester smack their own post from a corner - then go up the other end and score https://twitter.com/SkyFootball/status/1736842213030580695?t=BctdDTksYs7wzWru2_DT0w&s=19
I assume that they mean the trialist with a brace scored twice rather than he wore a leg brace?
He's been training with Wimbledon
I was surprised that he's only 27 and with his a record at this level without a club. Couldn't see that he has had significant injury issues apart from a really bad time with Covid. Why haven't clubs come in for him.
He’s just recovered from an ACL. The same injury as Brandon Hanlan.

Pompey offered Curtis a new contract...

I retract. Good luck to the lad. I hope we get him in and he’s a version of the guy I’ve seen play against us.
Oh dear...Cooper out at Forest and Nuno in. Might mean survival but yet another underwhelming management appointment...
Notts Forest could do worse. Nuno has received 11 Manager of the Month awards in his various clubs in the last 9 years. I thought he did OK at Wolves getting them into Europe.
