  • FT tonight, Winslow United 2-0 Risborough Rangers.

A very entertaining game with some unusual aspects. Five minutes before the start an appeal went out over the PA for someone to act as the assistant referee. One hadn't turned up. At 7:50 the match started with Rangers sub Ben Burgess taking the flag.

The Winslow keeper, Sam Ashmead, a big Chairboys fan, was wearing a WW shirt during the game, below.

He made a number of great saves to keep out Rangers. Then the visitor's keeper was injured on the half hour, the lino Sturgess went in goal, another Rangers sub took the flag. Five minutes before half time Sturgess let a weak shot through his legs to give Winslow the lead at half-time.

Winslow were very strong after the break and deservedly scored a second on 71 minutes, to give their manager Paul Bonham, manager at Risborough last season, a satisfying win.

A good crowd of about 150 enjoyed a fast paced, end to end game, with plenty of skill on show. There were some crunching tackles, but players got up and got on with it. It was very competitive but played in a good spirit.

My dream of Winslow v WW is still on!

  • Results so far.

    Abingdon United 1-2 Shrivenham

    Winslow United 2-0 Risborough Rangers

Aylesbury Vale Dynamos 3-2 Wokingham & Emmbrook

Holmer Green 3-3 Long Crendon (Long Crendon win 6-5 on pens)

Wantage Town 2-2 Reading City (Wantage win 4-3 on pens)

Milton Keynes Irish 0-3 Amersham Town

    Burnham 7-2 Woodley United

    Holyport 1-5 Wallingford & Crowmarsh

To be played on 6 September:

    Berks County v Milton United

    Langley v Ascot United

  • Did Sam Ashmead used to work at the club? I recognize his name.

  • Holmer Green won 6-5 on penalties

  • Thanks for the correction @peterparrotface, the B & B and Spartan South Mids sites both have it as an 'away' win. Originally Long Crendon were drawn at home so presumably the tie was switched to Holmer Green, who technically were still the away team.

A welcome win after four league defeats out of four.

  • Keith Scott assisting the caretaker management team at Holmer as well I believe?

  • On Monday I went to watch Windsor v Flackwell Heath and thought I recognised a sub who came on for Windsor and scored an excellent goal. Looked him up and it was Barry Hayles, still playing at a decent level at the age of 50!

  • Was he still cheating?

  • He was certainly cheating the accepted norm that you can’t play decent football after you’ve turned 40!

  • Are you still walking a good game @glasshalffull ?!

  • @glasshalffull how did Flackwell look? Quite an average start for them in the Combined Counties

  • Interesting to see Oxfordshire teams in the competition. The county reorganisation in the 70s didn't happen as far as sport is concerned. The North Berkshire league has more from Oxfordshire than Berkshire.

  • They started well and played the better football in the first half but were rather toothless in attack. Windsor’s finishing was superior and they were comfortable winners in the end. It was a more enjoyable watch than Marlow v.Thame that I also attended which was more a trial of strength and who could kick or head the ball the furthest.

  • Last two 1QR games played tonight.

Berks County 1-1 Milton United (Milton win 5-3 on pens)

Langley 2-3 Ascot United (B & B site has 2-4 but both clubs say 2-3)

  • Second Qualifying Round Draw

Winslow United v Aylesbury Vale Dynamos

    Ascot United v Flackwell Heath

    Holmer Green v Amersham Town

Newport Pagnell Town v Chalfont St Peter

Penn & Tylers Green v Shrivenham

    Milton United v Sandhurst Town

    Buckingham Athletic v Wantage Town

    AFC Aldermaston v Burnham

    Wallingford & Crowmarsh v Windsor

Matches to be played by Monday 3 October.

  • Tonight's games.

Winslow United 1-3 Aylesbury Vale Dynamos

    Ascot United 0-2 Flackwell Heath

Holmer Green 4-4 Amersham Town (Amersham win 11-10 on pens)

    Wallingford & Crowmarsh 0-1 Windsor

At Watchet Lane, Holmer came back from 3-1 down, to take a 4-3 lead, before Amersham equalised late on. If I read the Magpies Twitter correctly, Amersham had two goalkeepers sent off, and striker Harley Sells scored their first goal and saved two penalties in the shootout.

  • Sounds a remarkable match @Steve_Peart.

Amersham’s third choice goalkeeper (an outfield player) must be incredibly versatile.

Our foot health practitioner’s partner is a diehard Holmer Green fan, even going to away games, I think. He will not be a happy bunny.

  • What a game now that sounds like value for money entertainment

  • Tonight's results.

    AFC Aldermaston 6-1 Burnham

Penn & Tylers Green 2-3 Shrivenham

  • Last night's games.

Buckingham Athletic 9-0 Wantage Town (HT 7-0)

Newport Pagnell Town 7-1 Chalfont St Peter (HT 2-0)

    Tonight's result.

    Milton United 2-3 Sandhurst Town

That completes the Second Qualifying Round.
